Hopefully someone knows a way to replace the cam bearings at home with the engine on the stand and without having to pull the crankshaft? I sure hope I don't need to take this engine completely apart and take the block to a machine shop...

If that is the worst damage to both cam bearings I wouldn't worry about it, truthfully. The gouge, scrape, will act as a oil reservoir which will help lube the cam better   I've seen cam bearings a lot worst than that in running motors that had sat for along time that had acid damage to the babbit  Those motors ran great and had no oil pressure problems at all  It's up to you

You can put new cam bearings in w/ the crank and rods still in the motor. Your local machine shop should be able to fix you up.

As Cab said... put the cam in and see if it turns
freely... most (if not all) cam bearings need to be
sized anyways(I have a old cam with slots cut in to
spin in it)

I know it can be done b/c I've done it before. Several times actually, for people that didn't want to tear apart their shortblock.

If you brought your motor to me and wanted new cam bearings I would not do it without removing the crank. I have been doing it longer than most of you.

I wouldn't feel safe running those, but thats just me. Oh, and I have done my cam bearings with the crank in also ...If you don't have the tool or are afraid to tackle it, im sure you machine shop can give you a hand
