I feel so dumb...I was carefully removing the stock camshaft a few minutes ago, but when it was about halfway out of the block I had a coughing and sneezing fit...I am recovering from the flu.
Anyway, I ended up deeply scratching the #2 and #3 cam bearings. Hopefully someone knows a way to replace the cam bearings at home with the engine on the stand and without having to pull the crankshaft? I sure hope I don't need to take this engine completely apart and take the block to a machine shop... thanks for your advice.
If that is the worst damage to both cam bearings I wouldn't worry about it, truthfully. The gouge, scrape, will act as a oil reservoir which will help lube the cam better I've seen cam bearings a lot worst than that in running motors that had sat for along time that had acid damage to the babbit Those motors ran great and had no oil pressure problems at all It's up to you

You can put new cam bearings in w/ the crank and rods still in the motor. Your local machine shop should be able to fix you up.

Thanks guys! I thought I had really screwed myself. The one I took the picture of is by far the worst, number 2 has a comparatively light scratch you can see in this photo) The other bearings look new. Should I polish the scratched area of the bearings with something like a scotchbrite pad before I install the new cam? Oh, I mean "...install the new cam AFTER I stop sneezing and wheezing..."
I would install the new cam, if it slides in easy and turns easy run it If it slides in hard and turns hard then remove it and remove the high points on the scrape and try again, keep doing that until it installs and turns smoothly

As Cab said... put the cam in and see if it turns freely... most (if not all) cam bearings need to be sized anyways(I have a old cam with slots cut in to spin in it)

hi, I install cam bearings in engines. only way to get bearing and sleeve in is from the bottom, where crank is at!!
I know it can be done b/c I've done it before. Several times actually, for people that didn't want to tear apart their shortblock.

If you brought your motor to me and wanted new cam bearings I would not do it without removing the crank. I have been doing it longer than most of you.
