I am thinking of using solid roller lifters in my 440. Is there anyting special I need to do to use them? Can I drop them in and go? i know I will need the right lentht pushrods and such. Just wondering if there are anything out of the ordinarly I will need to address with going with solid roller lifters. Thanks.

You will need a thrust button to prevent cam walk, and possibly a new distributor drive gear depending on what the cam core material is. You most likely know you need valve springs, etc. To match the more aggressive roller also.

you need a roller cam , a bronze or composit dist. gear. should have a button or some means to set end play on the cam to limit movement as the rollers dont have any taper on them. correct valve springs , thats a good start.

You prob. need to get a 3-bolt timingset aswell if you don't it already.

You need a set of lifters that will work without having to bush the block - this means that the rollers must be shrouded on the oil galley side. Ask here before you shell out the coin.

If you bush the block, ignore what I just said.

I guess that is what I was wondering about. The drive gear, button and springs I knew about. The block is not bushed and how do you tell if the lifters are shrouded on the oil galley side?

Several things come into play as far as which lifters you need, tell us about your cam, new, used, reground or not, small base circle cam, how much lobe lift, steel or cast core camshaft and so on I've used a lot of solid roller camshafts with and without the special lifters in unbushed blocks I'll post a picture of both types once we see if you need those type or not I had one race hemi motor using a solid roller high lift cam need the special lifters

I dont have a cam yet! I am collecting parts for a build/upgrade. I have a 440 in my scamp.. Thinking of upgrading to aluminum heads, maybe the stealths and going with a bigger roller cam. I have templated ported 452's now and a comp XE274 cam. I was wondering if there were any mods needed to go with solid roller lifters. I would like to not have to mod the block if I could keep from it. Its a street car... Dont see a lot of mileage.

Bushed block or not, if this is a street car you'll need a GOOD, Quality set that will survive on the street. This means a set that supplies oil to the rollers. Right now, compared to Fords and Chevys, there are only a few offered for Mopars. Plan on spending about $800.. And those will more than likely have the rollers shrouded for use in the unbushed block. Post on here when you're ready to buy as there are some dealers who can give you VERY good pricing. FWIW, I bought a set of Comp 66550's off of COMPETITIONWEDGE last summer and he was $100. less than Summit or Jegs.

check this thread out:

they build BB's all the time, you could probably give him a call and he'd tell you everything you need to know and what stuff you will need. they have a couple different types of solid rollers on that page to choose from, for different applications. good people to deal with MRL

Also think about how aggressive a cam you want , solid rollers can be hard on springs and have higher spring pressures. Also rocker arm choice is critical with a solid roller because of the higher spring pressure , Harland Sharp rockers at a minimum would be my choice.
