My car starts fine but when key returns to run position the accessories wont work(gauges and turn signals). With car off and key fully back they work. I think it is the switch but just wandering if anyone else has had this problem before I tear the coll umn appart?

At that point in time see if you have fire/continuity at the appropriate wires in the pull apart connector dangling under the steering column

Id say the ignition switch is the issue. Two wires in question here are the red (battery feed) and black (accessories circuit). Should have continuity between the two when key is in run or start only.

Anything else is a faulty switch.

I have an old D100 pickup with a tired ignition switch in the column. Sometimes when you release the key from the start position it doesn't return fully to the run position and the gauges don't work. Rotate the switch back a little and they start working - so yeah, could well be the switch.

Nacho, that's how I thought it worked but I have had two different brand new ignition switches (two different brands) that only provide power (between red and black/blue) in the run position. In ACC, no power just unlocks the steering wheel.

You are probably correct about the run position.

Maybe I am just lucky or there is a "revised" design out now?

well, doesn't makes any sense get the Key in ACC and not get ACC power LOL:

Take in mind the ACC position is one step backwards AND The first position forward mounted on column, really JUST unlocks the wheel . second step sets in RUN... will turn on the BRAKE and OIL light ( if equiped ) on cluster

ACC position ( back ): continuity between red and black

RUN position: Continuity between Red and Blue and Red and Black

Start position: Continuity between Red and yellow, and red and Brown

This test with ballast unplugged
