Looking for a inline VSS (vehicle speed sensor) to use for data logging. There are a couple different mopar types out there:

The one shown is for an M-body.

Wondering what kind of signal they emit. Are they 5 VDC or 12 VDC input?

If it only has two leads going to it, it's probably has a variable reluctor internally, which outputs an AC sine wave.

If it has three wires, it's probably a hall effect sensor with a square wave output. While spec'd at 12v, it would likely work just fine at 5v.

Would this one bolt in place?

If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

Did they have pulse counters back then?

That is correct. To use the one you show you will need a pulse or tone wheel for it to count. The one from summit would be easy to use as it hooks to the speedo cable and has an internal pulse ring. Ron

After looking at the pic again I think I was wrong as the one the OP shows does look like it hooks to the speedo cable and would work. Ron

Yep. It goes right inline with the speedometer cable.

Just wondering if it will generate a pulse signal I can harvest with my Innovate Motorsports SSI-4.

Innovate use to have a web forum where you could ask these kinds of questions, but it's gone now. I do seem to recall reading that 5VDC would not generate strong enough signal through one of these 12V sensors. I might have to feed it 12V and then step down the signal so as not to fry the SSI-4.

I don't think there are any 5V sensors you can use inline with your conventional cable.

I nabbed the one pictured for less than 10 bucks from Rock Auto. I'll play around with it a bit once it arrives.

Years ago some of the speed sensors Mopr used like that for cruise control actually had a reed switch in it with contacts. The reed switch contacts would open and close from a magnet in it as the pulse ring turned. They were just fed 12 volts from the controller as it looked for ground (0 volts) and open (12 volts). Course it may be a two wire sensor like a dist pick-up that sends out an AC wave signal. As was said before it would need three wires to be a hall effect sensor. But you will need a controller to read the signal. Ron
