Installed the new 489 unit and the ujoints were different so I bought the conversion one plus new strps and bolt (hardened)
Well first blast down the highway hard and Bam broke the 4 bolts clean in the yoke !!
Okay all that is no biggie to fix,
but.........
The drive shaft must have been kicking around real hard and now is stuck in the tranny !!!
Tried everything to pull it out,Must have crossed up some splines..... Anybody get one stuck and GET it out ??
Most likely the tail shaft is a gonner !

Maybe attach a slide hammer to the shaft and try to pull it out. Or a chain hooked to another vehical.

I had a yoke stuck in a 4 speed when a tailshaft bushing went out in the desert, and I drove untill the mainshaft warped ( but I made it to civilazation) . I had to cut off the end of the yoke with the joint in it. I removed the tailshaft housing over the yoke. Then i split the yoke lengthwise and removed it in halves. this was all to no avail, since I then found the mainshaft warped. I wonder if your mainshaft could have bent. this would explain why the yoke will not side out ! Also, don't use the bolts that come in the aftermarket u joint kits, as they do have a knack for breaking. Use the OEM ones. Also did you have the two clips on the u joint caps to keep them square in the yoke ?

You might have even bigger problems, Check the bellhousing
I had the same thing happen once and it broke the trans off the engine! Better check around your bellhousing and starter for cracks. It is also possiable to damage your engine from the vibrations.

sounds like y ou should probably pull the trans and chcek it out reaaaaal good. The yoke is probably all twisted up in the tail shaft.

not even going to chance it,plus wanted a better trans anyway, JW trans is getting a call this week.

Yes the clips were in,after checking looks like the ujoint craked down the middle, could be from swinging around but would explain why if so...

You have to be careful how you orientate a U joint on installation. If the joint has a grease zirk location in the cross, you need to install the joint so the zirk is under compression when the driveshaft is putting the twist to the yoke to turn it. If it is installed in the wrong position, it will tend to split the U joint in half.

Looks like that might have been the trouble, The u joint is split in the middle now !

Concerning the conversion U joint get a Dana Spicer. 5-547X I have run into a problem with the other brands in regards to the cap size being off. The Dana fits perfect
