74 Challenger 318 car.So far I have had the battery and alternator checked both good. replaced the voltage regulator and ballist. I found that I fried the wire coming off the alternator going into the bulkhead so replaced it with another wire with a fuse in it. still coming out of the alt im pulling 11.7 volts the battery shows 12.2 and discharges. I unhooked the wires under the dash going to the ampmeter they were fine, not sure what to do with those wires so i left them unhooked. I ran a bypass wire from the battery lug on the alt. to the starter relay switch and still NO CHANGE..any thoughts. I believe this all started after I hooked up the msd ignition. I double checked that hook up and its right..

If you are not getting 13+v right at the back of the alternator, you need to look at the rest of the circuit to the alternator itself. Voltage regulator (I've gone through quite a few "new", crap parts store ones), check your connections at the alternator, power at the regulator, good ground for the regulator, etc...

Most charging systems with an ampmeter in the system has charging voltage and all of the amperage going thru the gauge so if the gauge is not hooked up you cut flow. If both wires are there and no gauge you need to hook them together. Best thing would be to hook up a gauge even if temporary to read whats going on.

I was going to hook them together but wondered about hooking a red/blk wire together didnt want to short anything else out..I'll get another voltage ragulator tomorrow might even replace the starter switch.I know theres a ground wire coming from the block to the voltage reg, shound I run another ground wire from the frame to the v/r? I have cleaned and sanded all ground connections.

Hook the 2 gage wires together. Use a bolt, lock washer and a nut. Then put elec. tape around the new connection and make sure everything is covered. That will complete the circuit.
From the sounds of it I think the alt. Is not putting out of a charge.
Take the alt down to a parts store and let them check it out.

That was the first thing I did Auto Zone checked the battery and alternator twice just to make sure they were good

eng at a fast idle see if batt voltage(or within a few tenths of it)at blue field wire at the alt and the blue wire on the VR plug in connector. If so ground the green wire(for 3 seconds) at the VR plug in connector with the eng at a fast idle & see if you are now charging.
