I've got a freshly built SB 727 non-lockup about '79 vintage( junkyard find) and a BB 727 that needs rebuilding '72 MY. Is it feasible to swap the guts over? I figure the tailshaft housing may need to go as well. I'm spending a lot on $$ getting the engine together for the swap, so not dropping extra coin going through the second trans is going to be very helpful. Any help is much appreciated, Steve

All of the guts from the '79 SB 727 will swap into the '72 BB 727 but it might not be a wise decision. The '72 BB will likely have heavier duty parts (planetaries, clutch count) than the '79 SB.

Thanks, John. I put in upgraded red clutches, 4.2 lever and a Cope valve body. This is a street car that will probably get to Willow Springs for the CPW meet. NO drag racing and no slicks, guess I'll take my chances, or put in new planetaries. I don't recall the # of pinions in them, but will soon enough.

I've seen quite a few big-block 727s with 3 pinion planetaries and 4 disc clutches. So, I'm not sure the 727-Bs necessarily came with heavier duty components.

My DC Chassis book tells the variations. If the bigblock was a 383 2-barrel the transmission wasn't built as beefy as behind a 440 4-barrel. And in later years when the engines were barely making 150hp, the transmissions were pretty wimpy across the board.

Make sure you keep the front planetary with it's output shaft, the spline angle changed in either 75 or 76, and I'm not sure what differences there might be with the interface between the input shaft and the output shaft ...
