Lower is bare and dipped in cosmoline , upper I won't comment on because I'll probably be wrong

FWIW, if you want the cosmoline look, use Krylon battery protectant spray if you can't get cosmoline.

FB has seen some uppers with thin cosmo (and so have I....well, what appeared to be) but I think bare steel would be the "safest" bet for most.

I would like to hear some debate about the uppers

Lowers were bare steel dipped (partially) in Cosmoline (you can still buy it, costs around $80.00 a gallon). You can treat the raw steel with ECS's RPM to prevent rust on bare areas. Most, but not all, uppers were raw steel (some were gloss black), same story, use RPM to keep them looking new.

Just don't do the whole control arm in RPM and then try to put the Krylon over it. DAMIK... Acetone will remove RPM so you can spray the Krylon on. My uppers were bare steel.

Here's my poor mans method ....I RPM'd my entire control arm and gave it 3 heavy coats of LPS 3 (about a cans worth)

That's what I did, even let the protectent run when held in the vertical position. If you try to apply the protectant while they are laying horizontal, the runs "run" the wrong direction... After it dried, I applied a coat of Krylon satin clear for protection, ease of cleaning and reduce any over gloss appearance it may have...
