I am thinking of getting an aluminum big block water pump housing.

It looks like there are 3 options:
Mopar for $180 at Summit,
Sumit's house brand for $145, and
440Source for $65.

Needless to say, there is a pretty big price difference between these water pump housings.

I remember a few years back that people were having trouble with the 440Source housings because the passages were too small. Is that still the case or did they fix the problem? What about Summit's house brand? Or is this another case where I need to buy original and just take the punishment to my wallet?

The 440 source housing water temp probe location is on the drivers side of the housing (at least mine is) May be an issue with stock wire harness. Maybe new housings have location on passenger side??

I use a source housing. The issue comes down to using a good water pump whose impeller comes CLOSE to the housing but still clearances. And spin the pump at the right speed (right pulley diameters). Don't buy sources pump with the cast impeller...it's garbage IMO

If the rest of the system is up to par, radiator, fan, shroud etc, you'll be fine

I am using both a Milodon high flow pump and high flow t-stat. I use stock '68 pulleys.

I have seen the threads on checking the clearance. I will do that when I put this thing together again for sure!

Has anyone gone to work with their sanding roles to open up the 440Source housing? Time is money though.

Watch the E-Bag, I was able to pick up a new Mopar housing for 100.00.

I found a mopar pump and housing on the bag for $186. There are deals if you are patient.

Me too on the temp sender. You'll have to splice wire in to make it longer.

Or simply drill and tap the housing on the passenger side.

I got the same package, on my engine I've only had dyno time but the chrome thermostat housing hasn't leaked *yet* I prolly also shouldn't say chrome since I have since elminated the chrome and painted it hemi orange.

I have a new pump with the "scroll" impeller with the curved blades & I think it has CAT cast into the body. Is that the bad one?

That chrome one is a junker and will leak..
Go to Napa ask for #BK 6051051, its like $6 is cast like the OE one...

Just my $0.02...

Some information I just received from off the board suggests the CAT housing and 440Source housing are similar. I've never held them in my hands so I will admit I am going by hearsay.

I have also been told the Mancini part, which I had forgotten about, is good. That price looks great too.

Both the CAT and 440Source housings can be opened up.

I used the chrome neck from Mopar before. I have one word: junk.

Anything but that POS is an improvement.

I bought the 440 Source aluminum housing and pump years ago , never had a problem with over heating, bolted on with no problems. Use a after market gage so I don't know about the sensor location problem if there really is one.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

Same hear as Mancini told me it was their parts but it looks just like the MP without the MP emblem on it. And yes the chrome thermo housing leaked and is junk. I just used my old housing as I painted it all Max Wedge orange. Ron
