I have a question about a 70 Grand Coupe Cuda I'm looking to buy.

The original color is FC7 but the owner says it was painted Black with some crazy graphics on the side some time in the early 80's. The factory FC7 paint is all still there under the black paint.

Looks to me like a Purple 383 2BBL, Column Shift Auto, White Interior, Elastomeric Bumper, 8-Track.

Condition / Price:
Body is in great shape ! All the metal looks very good except for bottom 3" of rear quarter panels are bubbling (Needs a patch), the floor and trunk pans are very solid (never stored outdoors and carpet removed long ago), Underside very solid and clean, the fire wall has 3-round holes on the passenger side cut for gauges (previous owner raced it - will have to be fixed), fenders look good (hand rolled wheel openings for racing, but can easily be restored).
Comes with interior (needs restored), 440 engine and tranny, and Air Cond/Heater parts, overhead console, all in good shape. Al in all, it comes with almost everything.
Price as is: $8000.00

I know this is just a 2BBl 383 Automatic, but how collectible is a car overall if restored back to original ?

The car does not have a drivetrain, and If I buy it, I'd like to put a modern Fuel Injected Hemi with a 6-speed tranny rather than a 383. Everything else would go back to original.

If however, the car has some very collectible options, I might need to go back with a correct 383 / 727 drivetrain to keep it stock.

Never owned a Grand Coupe Cuda and not familiar with them, or their options.

Thoughts ?

Thanks

I pulled out my 1970 Barracuda Fact and Feature Manual to get you some info. The Grand Coup was the upscale model between the base Barracuda and the all out Cuda Performer.

The 383 2bbl was an option with the 383 4bbl, 330hp motor at the top of the option list for the Grand Coupe. The purple paint, elastomatic bumper and 8 track were all options, all very sought after today.

As far as value and what you want, I don't thing you are loosing anything by deviating from stock, but thats just an opinion. Most Barracudas and Grand Coupes get transformed into Cudas anyway. The good news it that its a 1970! The 72 and up cars are nice but don't go for quite as much as the 70 - 71s, so you are ahead there.

I can guarantee you that if you restore this car to stock, it may be very difficult to break even. You could put in the 440 for now if its good and then the gen 3 hemi and 6 speed as you can afford.

I say modify it to your heart's content but keep it a Gran Coupe instead of a 'Cuda clone.

I'll get photos of the car uploaded soon.
Did it have "Lunatic Fringe" painted on the side with colorful graphics ?

The code on this one looks to be White Vinyl with Black Carpet (At least this is how I've decoded it)...

Are you suggesting that fully restored this coupe might have a market value under $30k ?

You did say the original engine and trans are gone right ??? Like it or not it'll come in under 30 with the stock body/different engine senario...Just take a look at the nicely restored AARs and T/As going in the mid 50s right now and gauge off of that..Hopefully all the guys riding the mopar bus for the money will jump off before the next stop... ...I see a trend of flippers and gold diggers holding the bag in disbelief still trying to shake the money tree...
So the bottom line is build it like YOU want it and get out there and enjoy the car...

Not very "collectible"...Gran Coupes are just a Great starter for a loaded optioned out Cuda clone, build it the way you want and enjoy it...
