My original '70 4 speed console top plate has a flat spot in the chrome surround from the pistol grip banging against it. I was trying to figure out a good way to fix this to re-intrduce the correct shape in this area. Can top plates be welded? I was thinking of going that route and reshaping this area. Any ideas?

It's potmetal so you can't weld it, some type of brazing will have to be performed.

Sounds like it may not have the proper shifter box installed if the shifter is hitting the top plate ???

Unless your very skilled in "soldering" potmetal, I wouldn't attempt it, to much heat and the repair and a chunk of your top plate will disappear in a molten mess, take it to a chrome shop that does potmetal repair and chroming, after they give you the price, you'll find that buying a used top plate or repro is a better choice...

As always, your mileage may vary.

A12, Have you ever tried MuggyWeld? I have seen it before but have never tried it or heard much about the actual results from people who have.

Anyone ever used this product? Looks pretty straight forward.

Hey Charlie, you know those booths at every swap meet, where the guy is welding up holes in pop cans with this special rod and propane torch? I bought one of those kits, and I gotta tell you, it actually works. It takes a bit of practice, but it really works. When finished, you can sand it smooth and polish it, and the repair looks great. I've got some of that special rod if you'ld like to play around with it, just let me know, Bill

Wow! I'd just like to know who makes the kits. I've got a couple console tops that contracted the deadly 'tach mounting holes' disease.

I haven't tried this stuff. I did however use something similar I got from my local welding supplier to weld/solder/glue together a pot metal switch I had at work. It did work.
Maybe check your local welding sources as the starter muggyweld kit is kind of pricey for a single/test use. I only bought one stick of the stuff and used generic plumbing flux. Didn't think to ask what the brand name was, just told them what I was trying to do.
As Dayclona pointed out, it can go bad pretty fast, proceed with caution.
