Motor is in the shop, needs a new crank. since it is externally balanced, motor guy says add weight at the flex plate. Trans guy says give him the weight and he will transfer it to the tc. Any idea which is right? or, which is better????
Thanks

guess it depends on if you mean LA or magnum.

at some point the mags went flex plate balance, neutral converters.
so b&m makes a piece to bolt up a mag to a 727 with a neutral converter.

technically either works, but if for instance you are using an older 727 and have limited selection in converters the flex plate might be better.

Factory had the weights on the torque convertor,

That being said having a weighted flywheel would make it alot easier when swaping transmissions or convertor down the road.

Sorry.
I should have specified. It is a magnum motor with a 904 trans. When it came apart, I know the tc was weighted, Hamilton machine is doing the motor, and he is top notch. Cope racing built the trans, and he too is awesome??? is either or right?? I guess it makes more sense to me to weight the flex plate based on the fact there won't be any room for error when they transfer the weight to the tc. Additionally, does it change the balance moving the weight from the flex plate to the tc?? Different locations. Other option is a steel crank and balance it internally but I'm not sure I want to spend the extra $$$$ for the plus or minus 400 hp.

Myself I'd get the flex plate that's externally balanced for a magnum that way you can swap TC's later if needed. Best I would think would be to internal balance it IF it can be done with that setup but I'm not sure it can & as you said it would be more money.

Just 2 different ways of doing things, Be it balanced by the flywheel or convertor IF done right, it won't effect the motor's balance job

for 400hp the factory cast crank is more then up to the task no need to go forged.
