I have been using cometic head gaskets , but they keep going up on price, now $200.00 set, was wondering if felpro1009 would work or has anybody tried the mr gasket mls gaskets? .I have a stroked 440 to 500ci with indy 440-1 aluminum head with 13.25 compression. When i ran cast iron indy heads I used the felpro1009 with no problems but when i switched to aluminum indy I started using cometic .

I have reused my Cometic head gaskets several times, then I finally bought a new set for the last rebuild. I agree the price has gone up, but if you reuse them 3 times the cost is reasonable.

I agree with above. We have reused our Cometics 4 times with an iron block and aluminum heads. Sealed up great every time, and all we did was clean them. No copper spray or anything.

We are replacing them this winter. Not a bad price when you can reuse them multiple times.

According to one of the guys on here that use to work for Mr Gasket before they moved thier entire gasket making operations to China they where the same. He posted on here that he thought after the company moved they started making ALL of the gaskest in China I had made a post about buying both sets of gaskets several years ago and found out they where the same, that was when he posted about them moving IHTHs

Question do you guys need to put sealer in the coolant to get heads to stop weeping ?
I have read a lot about this. Not sure i want to deal with leaks.
My car is a lot of trouble to change gaskets with solid mount and 4 speed with big tube headers!(Not a fun change)
Because i run perma torque on my motor but would like to step up to small 50-100 shot of nos but don't trust the the perma torque.
also compression and block over hang is a problem on my block with the 1009.
Sorry i was not trying to hijack.

The block deck and the head surfaces need to be really smooth for the Cometics to seal properly 50 RA is in my head but contact them to make sure how smooth they recommend I've had the same problems on copper head gaskets, the head and block finish is key to the head gaskets sealing properly

I have used both the 1009's and the Cometic gaskets(2-3x) with out any problems. Last year I also did not like the Cometic price and went with the Mr. Gasket MLS. They seem to be fine even with 13.5 compression and Nitrous. One thing I did notice with the Mr. Gasket vs. the Cometic is that the gasket finish is different on the Mr. Gasket ones and they will not take a coating of Copper spray. It just about falls off after it dries. So I just cleaned them up again and used them as they were. No problems!!

Cab, yes that is what the mfg. recommends for the finish, but does anybody do this? I have never done this and alot of mopar racers i race with never do this just spray copper coat and install, and i have never heard of any gasket problems. Maybe someone will chime in that has had leaks.

Did you install the Mr Gasket MLS with the block and head finish the mfg. recommends? My block & heads dont have this finish, I have not seen a Mr Gasket MLS, so if this is required with the Mr Gasket I will not be able to use.

jimmysarrow I have never had my block(MP Megablock) or my heads (INDY) finished any way special. I always heard that just for insurance you should copper coat the Cometics so I always did without any problems but I also did not have any problems with the MR. Gasket MLS without any copper coat!

The first block that I bought and use Cometic head gaskets on was a new Mopar 426 street Hemi replacemnet block that was a pump gas 10:71 supercharged carbureted motor that I did not have the decks done before running it on the dyno It leaked water to the outside of the motor, none inside , on all four corners, embarrassing I had to take the motor apart and have it deck to get the proper finish after calling Cometic on that. That motor had a set of new Stage V aluminum heads that had a fairly smooth finish on the head surface but I went ahead and had them surfaced to Cometic specs, no leaky after that I built another low deck stroker motor two years ago and had the heads and block finished for the Cometics and it didn't leak on the dyno with the Mr Gasket MLS head gaskets

I ran Felpro's on my 13.25 to 1 big block w/Indy heads. No studs, just bolts. reused the Felpros 3 times, over 700 passes.

I am curious as to the thickness of the head gasket you are using ? I mean I ran cometic gaskets on my old 440 because I needed to drop the comp to 10.0 and with the milled 906 heads I used I needed a .074 head gasket so thats why I went with the Cometic. The Cometics worked fine for it. But on my new eng with aluminum heads and close to zero deck I just use the Felpro's at .039 for good quench and they hold up great. But I only run 10.6 comp. So I guess my question is do the Felpro's hold up good at 13.5 comp and if you run a .039 gasket do you need to use the Cometic at 13.5 comp ? Ron
