I use the same in my 440. Have to get NAPA to order it for me, but they get it by the end of the day.

I have always run the VR1 20/50,but our new engine/machinist says if its street legal its not good enough to run in a "High$$$" race-engine.So we now run the Lucas race only oil.

Several flavors of VR1, as well as other Valvoline racing oils. They all don't offer the same level of protection for flat tappet engines, so do your homework. Don't just go by "what you've heard". Lots of uneducated opinions on the subject.

The VR1 10W30 is generally a good choice for a flat tappet street motor, but nobody stocks it. As previously mentioned, NAPA keeps it at the warehouse, so they can get it. Just call ahead. IMO, the commonly stocked 20W50 is a little thick for a tight tolerance motor in cold weather.

They also have their "not street legal" racing oils, which are loaded with the zinc + phosphorus we all crave. They also lack detergents. Much harder to find, and more expensive.

Formulations are constantly changing in these big name oils driven by mass market and regulations, so what was true yesterday, may not be true today, and what's true today, may not be true tomorrow. In fact, my advice may already be obsolete.

This topic has been beat to death, so I won't pound on it much more, but if you truly want the ideal oil for an old car with a flat tappet motor, the specialty offerings from Brad Penn , Joe Gibbs and some others are your best choices, not the mainstream parts store stuff.

I use VR1 30 wt. VV223 in my 440 w/hyd. flat tappet cam. I only race it and I'm happy with it.
