So, it is now ONE year since I have gotten my 70 Sport Satellite back home from the body shop . . . no, it is not all together yet !! . . . And to think I figured I would put it back together by last June, then August, then September, then October, then . . . well, before spring 2013 !!!

It is tough when you are doing it all yourself, and have to work at your regular job. . . and keep track of all your parts, how things were together before you take them apart (take even MORE pictures than you figure you need) . . . you get tired and frustrated, so you put the tools down and get out of the garage before you break something !!!

And then you get things together as meticulously as you can, and then it doesn't work as intended, and you have to start trouble shooting and figuring out how you screwed it up and how you have to fix it !!!

And I keep telling myself this is my hobby and it is supposed to be fun !!! But it would sure like see forward progress ! At times it seems like one step forward and two steps back !!!

And then there is all the parts that I could have cleaned up and gotten ready for installation, while the car was at the body shop (7 months), but no !!! So now have to clean the part, paint it (if required) and THEN install it . . .

I wouldn't change it for anything. . . . just needed to vent and take a moment to relax and get away from the garage . . .

Anyone else find the same feelings during their build/restoration ???

Cheers

Mark

I'm sure we've all experienced some grief with restorations. I sent my T/A to a friend of a friend 3 years ago. The car was next to perfect but I wanted a show quality paintjob. Got my car back 2.5 years later and the paint looked like crap. Sent it to another restoration shop that claimed they could fix it in 3 weeks. Six months later I was rescued by another Moparts memeber. He recommended someone that had completed his T/A and the car is finally finished and looks incredible.
Many thanks to Jim D.

What I hate is looking at a component, like a voltage regulator, and saying 'yup, it worked before, should work now'. And it doesn't. You can't avoid it unless you buy everything new and even then I think the only thing that is a sure thing is that you'd be broke.

Yeah it's never easy - specially if you took your car apart 20 years ago

Took apart 20 years ago ?!?!?!? Wow, nothing like rushing a project !! heh heh heh . . .kidding of course.

Guess I was just getting frustrated with not really seeing much progress and then running into an issue with the ac/heat fan control. But you know, taking time away and reflecting on what an issue could be, is good ! Now that I have that solved and few other little things done, I am on cloud nine again !!! The light at the end of the tunnel is getting much brighter !!!

Good luck to everyone with your project !

Cheers

Mark

Mark,

I actually got the car out of Calgary 23 years ago. Started the restoration and then life got in the way. Job, wife, other hobbies, playing with other cars all got in the way.

Now it's back on track and should be done before summer.

Cheers
Chris

Wow Chris . . . my car came from LA way back in the 70's. Was able to talk to original owner and he said he ordered it as his "Baby GTX" . . . 318, factory a/c, cruise control, console auto, 6way drivers seat, deluxe steering wheel, and FC7 In Violet with black vinyl top !! Hopefully will be able to drive it to Spring Fling 2013 !!! . . .

I dropped my car off (empty shell, totally bare with everything removed, only a rolling chasiss) on May 21, 2011 and got back from body shop on Dec. 28, 2011 ! 7 months of body work and paint.

My 69 RR convertible has been in body and paint since March. It was about as bad as it could've been when I took it to the guys. They've done a hell of a job, and I am as happy as I could possibly be with the job they've done. They never gave me a date of return, but I expected it to take a year. I should get it back in a couple weeks fully painted. They are way ahead of schedule in my eyes. It was a full rotisserie restoration, with new EVERYTHING in terms of metal. If someone (AMD, Goodmark, US Car Tool) made it, I bought it! I say if you like the guys doing it, and they're doing a good job, let them take their time and do it right. It's probably going to take you a long time to reassemble it anyway, so what's a few extra months?

This thread hits home for me too. I should've been painting, assembling, and prepping parts for reassembly but I haven't. The truth of the matter is money has been too tight. The body and paint, along with stocking up on reassembly parts has tapped me out. I'm devoting my entire tax return to under the hood parts and completion. I too will be restoring it for the most part by myself, with a little help from family and friends. I'm doing this for the first time, so I'm sure it will take way longer than it would for someone more experienced. I'm going into this as a learning experience. I'm sure I'll hit a wall, or two (or ten), but I'll figure it out.

If I can drive it by spring 2014 I would be okay with it. After 3 years of restoration, I stopped being in a hurry a long time ago.

Normal, my vert sat for 6 months (a retiring painter wanted it as his last paint) then the owner wanted the car gone, 6 weeks later I got it back. Looks great 16 years later, must have been the only thing he worked on. Oh yeah, don't keep track of costs, it's too depressing. Just throw the reciepts in a shoebox jic. I may have 40K in my vert, don't know, don't care but that's over 20 years.

Dito! Hang in there, otherwise you will have waisted all the work and money already spent! (See "cost of restoration? thread earlier in this section).

Don't worry we've all been there. Sometimes it helps to walk away from the project for a little bit, gather up some motivation and get back at it.

Yup, that is about the way it goes. As mentioned, it is a hobby and supposed to be fun, so when the fun goes and frustration grows, get out of the garage !!!

I am more motivated now and see the light at the end of the tunnel. Sure don't want to screw anything up, considering how well the paint and body came out !!! So, slow and steady. Heck, I have other cars to play with and life continues with or without working on the project ! At least I know it will be done for driving fun this spring !!!

I dropped my car off to a local body and paint guy just over a year ago. He is almost finished with the car, if I would have had the time, I would have done it myself. Now I have run out of money and will have to wait a year or 2 to finish the car, I can't wait until I get it done....

Friend of mine started his restoration 5 years ago and it is almost done. He had zero experience in any kind of restoration.Never new how to get all the sheet metal he needed or really anything for the car. He taught himself how to weld and added frame rails, floors, quarters all kinds of metal work. Did all the interior work himself like the seats, put in all the interior himself. He was down many times and I would go over and would be amazed at the work he was doing. I would tell him what a great job he was doing but sometimes he thought I was just blowing wind. When he took the body to the paint and body shop the guy says to him, now we will see what kind of welder you are after I blast the car and all the welds. The guy phones him up after the Blasting and says to him, that there is not one spot on the complete car that needs any kind of repair and the painter wants to thank him for such a great job. You do a lot of the work yourself and it does take for every but it is usually a job done correctly with no short cuts.

Yup, never under estimate the power of not knowing what you are getting into !!! Makes you believe you can do it all !!! I started this project thinking I would cut out all the old rusty metal and weld in all the new panels - until I figured I would take 3 times the amount of time, and still need a body shop to fix up my mistakes . . . so have the body shop do the metal work and paint. . . sold a car to pay for that !

The rest of it, I have no problem tackling. So far it has been fun, frustrating and interesting. I am sooo happy I am getting to the end of it though. I really just wanna drive the damn thing !!!

Hopefully everyone else has as much fun with their project !

Cheers

Mark
