03 dakota, v-6, rear disk brakes.

I'm guessing to get the axle out to replace a seal, I have to pull the diff cover and find whatever holds the axle shaft in. C clips maybe?

Wish they were all good old 8 3/4" rear ends. They were are simple.

remove cover and drain, remove the locking pin and slide out the big pin and push the axle in to remove the c-clip, then pull the axle out. PS. be careful not to break off the head on the small locking pin as they seem to snap off pretty easy. Also I never removed a axle on one with disc brakes so there may be additional steps in the removal.

And when you slide the axle out realize the axle shaft is a wearing part of the wheel bearing & it is commonly worn causing the axle seal to leak.... Look for a 3/4" wide groove worn into the bearing surface....

Not sure which axle it is honestly. I would guess 8.25. It's an 03, ext cab, v-6 2wd automatic with a sure grip. The sure grip is noisy. Makes a gawd awful noise when turning. But, with 320,000 miles, it's no real surprise. Otherwise it's a dang nice looking and driving truck

It's leaking skunk juice onto the left rear brake. Trashed the park brake shoes and the pads.

it could be either one in a dakota my quad cab has a 9 1/4 but its a v8 i would bet the v6 has an 8 1/4 either way same design. if the axle is worn from the wheel bearing you can get new bearings that move the wear surface to a fresh spot on the axle.

put some of the sure grip additive back in and it may help with the noise (Genuine Mopar Parts 04318060AB Limited Slip Additive - 4 oz. Bottle)

We did quite a few at work. The axles do wear and the bearing fix usually works well.Be careful taking the bolt/pin out.they will snap pretty easy.SnapOn makes a tool to remove them if they break.Ive had the spiders slip out.Not real hard to get them in as long as the shims dont get moved from side to side.Rocky
