No two ways about it: Simple Green. It works. Ask me how I know.

I heard of doing this for the door seals and weather stripping, wouldn't you be worried about rusting the buckles?

Compressed air. Lots of it, as soon as you pull them out.

Should be fine.

what about using "dry cleaning fluid" aka brake cleaner?

I have wondered about taking them in to a dry cleaners and having them done. Seems like a good way to thoroughly clean them without water.

I've alway just run them through the washing machine. Rust? How is that an issue? Tey dry in a few minutes once out.

Nope. Spray on full strength, brush a minute or so then rinse. You may have to do it a few times to get all the dirt out.

It's also great for cleaning tires. Gives them that black rubber look - not the wet look. Same process. Spray on, scrub then rinse.

Remove grease? Yep.

What about using a reg pressure washer or the car wash to remove the tide, simple green , etc after brushing?

It seems that would be much better than the washing machine? That seems like a bad idea because of all the metal attached to your seat belts. Clanging around against themselves can't be good.

I have used a pressure washers to clean darn near everything including mud encrusted nylon lifting slings with one.

Now lastly I know new or rewebbed belts are not cheap but you should make the investment in new webbing if yours are near 40 years old.

A local place here who makes truck canvas, tie downs, truck seats, etc can make seat belts at reasonable prices, not like Snake oil Products which are really hi priced. ( I do have set from Snake oil, top of the line and perfect but not needed for most cars/drivers)

This is coming from someone who has experienced a 240 mph head on crash with solid concrete wall and lived to type this because of my belts and helment. They saved my life and I fully understand the 2 year rewebb NHRA rule on belts. Why do you think yours are alright after 40?

I also know pressure washing nylon webbing is bad for the slings and shortens there life.

Pressure washing your seat belts is no worse than washing them in the washing machine, better.

I have replaced many seat belts in my city delivery trucks, they put them on and off over 30 times a day and they do wear out.

I would keep the old ones in a box in the garage and use new ones in the car. They even have retro style ones available and are very affordable. I've bought and used many sets from this company including in my current Charger.
