Well close anyway. I was looking through and old article in Car & Driver and it has Golden Maverick and some other guy testing their 63 Dodge Max Wedge cars. One is an auto the other a stick. Then I see in the pic that Maverick has these bars about 3 or 4 feet long that he welded to the rear and then they go to the back of the car and hook to the frame right next to the rear leaf spring shackle hanger. They even have a drawing of how the rear tries to rotate and how these bars will try to pull the rear of the car down. I just never knew anyone used anything like that in 1963.
Oh the auto car of Maverick won as he ran 12.50's to the stick cars 12.60's I believe. on

Yeah, that was an early-'60s thing; at least one of the Melrose Missile cars had them. The thinking was to pull the rear down. In short order, people figured out that moving the spring leaves forward (SS Springs) or adding a short bar or slapper bar running forward was more efficient at getting the car to pitch-rotate and plant the rear tires. Traction Master had the forward bar deal in the '50s, so it would seem that the bars running rearward were also a means of adding rearend weight bias.

IIRC, NHRA outlawed them pretty quick as they felt the mounting points, the spring pad & U-bolts were getting too much leverage against them & could possibly break resulting in the rear-end mounting coming apart. The difference between them & the eventual accepted front mounted traction bars was the degree of leverage exerted. Essentailly the rearward ones worked too well & it scared 'em.

Ron, I remember seeing them on several modified production cars with leaf springs, no Mopars that I remerber though, at the old Fontana Drag City track, they called them lift bars out here I think they where square tubing welded onto the housing in a L shape and then bolted onto a bracket up front No pivots anywhere is what I remember

Please do. I've seen pics of Maverick's car but could never make out all the details.

Here is some pics from the article. If you look close you can see the added bar on the inside of the leaf spring. Ron

Ron, those aren't the same ones I saw back when, the ones I saw where welded onto the housing and had one bolt holding them up front through a pair of brackets like ladder bars have now, by the front of the leaf springs, I was young back then and din't think to look closley at them
