A friend has a 340 cast 8/71 that he got from another friend. Doesn't really know much about this motor. The timing marks are on the pass side behind the lower radiator hose. With the alt, fuel pump and hose all right there it's almost impossible to see them. Can't get a good reading. Is this the right timing cover and balancer? Would think they would be on the left side where there is alot of open space.

The timing marks moved to the drivers side in 1970 when Chrysler changed to the aluminum water pump on the small blocks. Bracket setup is obviously different as well.

You could set it at TDC & add a pointer on the dr side then use a dial back light or make new marks on the dr side. .0632683" is (1) degree so 2.214" is 35 degrees etc. I have a late tcover(dr side) w early pump(dr side) & the marks can be seen but in your case with the added pain of the alt & fuel pump if the marks are pretty much obscured you might have to bite the bullet & R&R the dampener & get the 70 up t cover.

Ya, thats what I think we'll do is change the cover and balancer from a 71 318. Not to much trouble and will be best in the long run.

I you are going to the trouble to change the cover, now would be an EXCELLENT time to make sure the marks are actually corret. This easy way is to use a positive stop. Make one like this, from an old spark plug: You may have to play with the bolt length. Screw into no1, and CAREFULLY wrench the engine over until it stops. Make a temporary pencil mark ACCURATELY under the TDC mark on the tab. Rotate the engine CCW CAREFULLY until it stops, make a second mark under TDC. This should result in TWO pencil marks some distance apart. The TRUE TDC is exactly in the center of the two marks. By carefully measuring the circumferance of the wheel with a flexible tape, you can figure the "degrees per inch" and scribe degree marks on the wheel.

Your right guys, probably should. I have a positive stop tool that I made years ago. Always a good thing to do when using a used 35 year old balancer.

You're positive that you cant position your light to see the marks? If you are up & running it'd sure save you alot of work. Mine(hose/marks) are both on the drivers side & it's not too bad but you do have extra obstacles on the passenger side to deal with. You could even take off the fan belt & swing the alt up & out of the way. To just set the timing real quick it isn't going to overheat with the WP out of commission for a minute or 2.

Can barely see some of the timing marks. Can't see the balancer at all. He has a small oil leak in that area so he's game for the change out. Wants the right parts on there as well. It's a cool car. 70 Grand Coupe ragtop thats he's making a 340 Cuda clone out of. He is doing all the work. I'm just giving him the parts.
