I have a new, stock 1968 a-body gas tank I was going to use the sending unit/fuel pick-up hole to install a small in-tank electric fuel pump through for my efi conversion. I'm using a return style fuel system.

The car is set up for occasional road course and spirited open road driving.

After reading up on the subject, I understand I will need some baffling to control fuel starvation when I get below 1/4 tank.

Can I get away with using a foam type sleeve or any other effective method I can insert through the existing opening?

Should give up on the easy way and cut the top of the tank and install a trap-door type metal baffle attached to the bottom of the tank?

Or, should I cut the bottom of the tank and weld in a small sump on the bottom with baffles?

I found two good options to add an in in tank fuel pump in a stock tank.
Take a look at Tanks Inc and Aeromotive.

Just completed this mod on my car. I used a Aeromotive Stealth 340 pump mounted in my stock tank. A hole was cut in the top of the tank and a sump was installed from the top. -6 feed and -8 return lines. Very clean, looks factory.

sorry to dredge up this thread but im getting ready to order an atomic efi and im interested in one of these in tank setups. cutting the hole seems straight forward enough. i guess you cut a hole in the trunk floor that corresponds to the location of this set up on the tank? then its fuel lines in the trunk? i gotta be mossing something. Please be be gentle, long day today lol

I did an in tank pump on a 68 B body tank a couple months ago. Beacause the tank is deeper at the front I chose to mount it there. Maybe not the ultimate spot for fuel slosh on acceleration, but I used a Tanks Inc pump which has a fuel tray and it is a street car. I bought the pump recess plate that they sell too and cut the new tank and welded it in. This allowed me to mount the pump below the trunkfloor and leave the body stock. It was very straightforward.
I would think an A body would be better since the tank is deeper and kinda square. Less fuel slosh with an A body for sure.
I can't post pictures from my phone on here but I'll try to upload some to show my installation. The Tanks Inc pump was a nice kit and reasonably priced.
This is feeding a 528 with Atomic EFI. Works very nice!

Does the tray prevent you from running the tank to low? Looks like you could running out of gas at an 1/8 tank.

No, it's purpose is to stop the pickup from becoming uncovered when you are low on fuel and taking a sharp turn , accelerating fast or hard braking.

I was wondering the same thing since there are no visible holes for fuel to get into that tray !!

Holes in the tray would somewhat defeat the purpose of it , keeping the pickup submerged , but that could be a problem , need to see another angle of the pickup ...

EDIT ... I just went to tanks inc site , that pickup has a hole on the left side , can't be seen in the picture posted above , right at the bottom , looks to be maybe 1/2" , 3/8" ?

I am running the stock sender with it's tube soldered shut. I mounted the new pump on the left side to give it lots of clearance from the sender. It all worked out well. Yes the tray has a hole so it always has fuel in it. I ran braided lines along the factory route on the rocker pinchweld. It looks clean. The pump is nearly silent. I'm happy with the results andI would do it the same way again. In fact I probably will on the next B body.
