You must have a 318 if it has roller lifters in a 88.
You still using the tbi or did you swap to a carb?

If still using the tbi, you're stuck with stock, a reground stock (wheres patrick?) or using one of the old Compu-cams that was emissions legal.

The tbi system doesn't play nice when you get outside of its programmed comfort zone values.

An 88 isn't a magnum, that's important for valve train considerations.

What is it you want?

If you wish to keep the rollers there are a number of cams out there. If you want to convert it back to flat tappet there are lots more to choose from.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

A lot more options with a flat tappet cam and they are cheaper too.

88 318 is a roller cam engine. That said I think what you want to do is work on the compression and heads before the cam.

send your cam to www.bulletcams.com

use the HR259/326 on the intake, HR266/325 on the exhaust

http://www.bulletcams.com/Masters/HRlobes.htm

reuse the lifters if in good shape, check to see if the pushrods will work...if they're a tad short due to the base circle reduction, maybe mill the heads .040 to use them, or measure and find the right length.

the hughes whiplash is a nice street cam in the roller cam 318s

I run a lunati voodoo roller cam with comp 901-16 springs all stock roller gear. good daily driver cam.

done a few of the flat tappet whiplash cams and 1 roller whiplash. they just sound down right nasty at idle, smotths out by 1500 rpm, goes right in a stock low comp smog engine and makes a nice street cruzer.

I did not change anything on the 2 flat tappet cams, just stuck them in the stock 318 with a spring change, added a carb/headers.

If I switch to a flat tappet, do I just eliminate the roller lifter keepers and metal holder pan??

Yep. You will need the older style non-roller pushrods too.
