Just like the title says...put it in drive and it slams into gear at the axle and then when you get it up to about 50 mph, it starts vibrating real bad. I already ruled out U-joints. Its a 9 1/4 3.55 open rear, it has 105K, and I do tow a lot with it.

I remember reading about C-clip problems but mine isnt a limited slip rear. Does that sound like a bearing problem?

I wont have time to look at it until after the holidays so the truck is parked for a few weeks unless I send it to a shop.

when you checked the u joints was the pinion loose? also did you check the u joints by pulling the shaft? ive seen them whiped out and feel ok in the truck. ive also seen alot of 9 1/4s toss the clip that hold the track lock clutches in the diff carrier and then it grinds the right bearing cap before it ejects...then the rear is full of metal and it eats itself up...got one on the lift now that did that...00 1500 120k no hitch! if it was me id pop the cover and take a peek.

not being a lim slip it very well could be the pin oblonging the hole in the carrier...either way a clunk is the trans taking up the last...lash is the space between things...so if its all winding up somehtings moving somewhere

clunk when put in drive I'd think high idle speed/excessive backlash. On the vibration could put the rear up on stands remove the wheels/tires and reinstall lug nuts & have some one run it up to speed & you outside safely checking for vibration to at least eliminate the rear tires/wheels. dont forget to remind him to brake the driveline to a standstill before he moves the gear selector as it's easy to lose track of that since the vehicle ain't moving DAMHIK. Holler what it ends up being

Ive seen guys chech the joints while the shaft was hooked up.They will say they are good.I almost always pull the shaft to check them. That and if the rear is hanging unless the joint is pretty much falling out they usually wont move.Pull the shaft and check them.Ive seen too many bad one not called.Rocky

I check them by putting it in neutral and using the parking brake. Takes the strain off of the driveshaft and it isnt locked. That way you can shake the u-joints. Make sure you check them both ways, up and down and back and forth. I've seen people just grab them and push and pull, doesn't check both sides of the joint.

Check the pinion nut by chance??

Is it 2 or 4 wheel drive?

Im with Rocky. U-joint. Just did the same thing on my 04 Ram 2500. I was "whats that damn vibration Ive got?". Crawled under there ah the U-joints are good. Another month goes by, what the heck is that vibe?! Let me pull the driveshaft. Son of a bean the rear joint is wobbly. oops.

update; I tore it apart today and it was indeed a bad U-joint but what I couldnt see until it came apart was the inside of the yoke was scarred from the U-joint binding. I guess I didnt grease it enough when I installed it a couple of years ago.

After installing the new one make sure it moves thru its travel with no binding in both planes (front) & 1 plane (rear). Most all dont as installing the ujoint shifts the mounting holes in the shaft out of square. Set the shaft on its side with it just off the ground so the ujoint is off the ground & whack each shaft ear (2 are on each end) right behind the ujoint round end cap with a BFH/brass drift several times till it moves free & in some cases may need to remove/reinstall/rewhack the new ujoint till it's good

Hmm... I wonder what I'm going to find on mine...

the 04 Dakota is squeeking when moving. sound changes with throttle input, if I give it more throttle, the axle wraps up, changes the angle of the U-joints, and the sound goes away, lift, the axle unwraps, maybe even wraps the opposite way a little, and the sound comes back.

no clunks yet though.

And I'd be the Dakota has the same U-joints as the Ram. Same engine, Same Trans, Same Rear end.

if its squeeking the needles are dry, just a matter of time before the disintegrate...change it now before you tear it up

use a press or a socket on an aluminum shaft I use a ball joint press...alum shafts are a pain

Trust me, it's on the list of things to do, and it's closer to the top of the list than the bottom.

It's not daily driven anyway
