I am trying to determine whether I can squeeze 315/35-17 tires into my challenger wheel well. I have Dr. Diffs 1"offset spring hanger set, and 12" wilwood rear discs. If I plug my measurement from my diagram into this website http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp using backspacing of 7" and offset of 1", it looks like it may be tight! I do not have rims yet, I would like to use a 10" rim....... Heres my math: inboard clearance (tire and leaf spring)= .425" outboard clearance(tire and quarter panel skin)= .300" What do you think? Too tight??

I have found that shorter sidewall tires don't need as much clearance as the taller sidewall ones. Sidewall flex is the issue here. I think your inner clearance will be fine, the outer, I assume an unrolled lip, might be a hair tight and if it is you can roll the lip. When I put fat tires in my 72 Swinger I had a taller side wall and less clearance. On the inner it would just rub the leafs, I had to roll the the inner fender lip otherwise it would cut the sidewall under spirited cornering.
I do not remember what the tire size was anymore but I do remember I had about a finger's width (my finger) between the tire and the lip after rolling the lip, less between the leaf and the tire.
They say there are no such thing as a stupid question. They say there is always the exception that proves the rule. Don't be the exception.

This Challenger runs a 20"x 10" wheel on the back 275/30/20. I know because we built it!

Trim/flush the fender lips... the very top of the inner wheel well may also make some tire contact, pending ride height and occasional hard bumps. The 1" leaf offset should be good for the tire clearance. The rim's backspacing will be a very critical factor.

If he runs a 10" wide wheel like he says I would almost guarantee it will fit with minimal if any trimming. The dimensions of that tire will shrink on a 10 wide wheel.

The website states recommended rim for that tire be between 11-12". And Brad was right, my math was off slightly. I redid the numbers with an 11" rim and my clearances are now: tire width= 12.7" offset 1" backspacing 7.35" fender-tire= .15" tire-leaf= .275" that being said..... a 10" rim would shrink the width of the tire like 72swinger mentioned would it not? Also, Im not sure how a 11" rim with tire installed turns into 12.7" wide!! Thats ann additional 1.7".....does that seem right??? hoping i still have a chance.....

1.7 divided by 2 is .850 per side which seems right to me. Almost any tire sticks out further than the rim? No?

For reference... Lets see if I can these pics posted on my car... 16x10 rims having a 5" backspace (yeh.. should be 5.5" to remain absolute factory centerline), tires are Hoosier A6 Autocross 275-45-16, body is lowered f/r, lips are flushed/pulled/massaged to appera stock... but this is OK as per the allowed SCCA E/SP class rul;es (flairing allowed.. but relocating the springs such as the 1" inboard kit is NOT legal since it no-longer is the factory original location as required). The front fender lips were easy to flush... the rear were more work.. cut, flushed, rewelded, massaged.. looks stock (again, SCCA Street Prepared class rules allow thuis... some cars have big wide flairs!). Challengers have a little more rear tire room than Cudas.. speaking of E-bodies.

I am running 17x10 wheels with 315/35/17 on my 74 Cuda. My car is pretty low to the ground, so I do get some minor rubbing on the wheel houses during big suspension movements, but it is nothing that is severe enough to concern me at all. I think if the car is lower you will run out of wheel tub where they start to curve in towards the top. That is where mine will rub when and if it makes contact, which is rare. I am running Nitto tires which run a little narrow for their size which also helps. I think I have 6.75 backspacing if memory serves me correct. I am using the Dr. Diff hangers, but have incorporated them with the Street Lynx rear suspension.
Nitto's actually run a LOT narrow for their size. I was looking at a car at the track a couple years ago with Nitto 315's and i thought they were 295's. The guy insisted, so i actually got down and had to look.
I've done a couple mock-ups on my 70 Challenger with a 315/35/17 BFG KD and i figure with the PERFECT rim offset, and moved springs and some massaged sheetmetal it would work. Line up the leaf with the frame rail, mini-tub the wheelhouse to the frame rail and massage the lips and i think theres lots ov room for even a 335 under there.
