Anybody seen this happen before? I thought the odd time they did break it was near the spline. Race only, 3300lb 10.20's car, 600HP 1.38 60' s. Dana 60...Sure messed my car up, of course it wrecked the 1/4 panel, and when the axle hit the ground it bent my ladder bar brackets over and bent my driveshaft too. They had been on the car since 2000, but axles are something you figure will last forever at this level. By looking at the axle it seems to me it was partially broken for a while, causing the shiny area around the edge.

It happened on the launch, I was really lucky it didn't happen a couple seconds later as it would have made a real mess.

I broke an old Mark Williams 35 spline earlier this year but it broke near the carrier. Looks almost exactly like the one in your picture. Mine broke at the launch as well....instant left turn!

My car is a 1969 roadrunner 3800lbs 4 speed (10.80's @ 127)

I didn't hurt anything, sorry you did.

Sorry about your misfortune, I have had the same 35 spline Moser's in my car for about 12 years now,,, maybe I better buy a new set instead of having mine shortened and re-splined before

I have only ever seen them break there in a higher hp car shaking the tires. I have been mid 8's with my 35 spline stuff and plan to go 7's here soon, just reminds you anything made by a man can break. Good luck

One day I will have something cool here.

It's a fatigue failure. Those things do take a while. You are right, the "beaching marks" tell the story of how the failure progressed.

I can't explain how, but it looks like the axle was not straight, so the shaft went through a bending cycle with every rotation. Then all you needed was a small pit or ding on the surface to start the cracking process.

R.

I have see it before. A few times. Always a Strange and always right where yours broke. I went with moser because of it.

Any metal object that sees load/no load conditions will fatigue. The trick is knowing what the fatigue life of a part is to get the most out of it while replacing it before something catrastrophic happens. Nothing lasts forever in a racing environment.

To the OP, 1.38 60' times are no joke at 3300 lbs. Since this is about number of cycles.....how many passes is the question....not how many years old.

Sorry to hear of your failure, I'm glad you didn't get hurt and the car didn't get hurt worst The first time I saw a race axle break like yours was Mark Williams in a GM 12 bolt at Orange county back in the 1970s or 1980s, Mark Willaim use to sell lifetime guarenteed axles and that was one of them. Mark Williams overnighted a new axle to the track for that racer for no charge, I'm sure they didn't pay for the body damage A freind of mine bought a older NHRA stick shift stocker that had a set of Mark Williams 30 spline axles in the 8 3/4, he switch the third member and saw that the left axle had started twisting, around one spline. He called me and I told hime to swap it over to the right side It broke off at the next race Mark Williams told him to never swap axles after running them, it messes up the grain in the steel, or something like that I've broke, twisted off, two stock axles drag racing, both twisted off in the splines where it came out of the posi units, both where left axles

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

A friend of mine had a new Moser axle break off at the hub, they sent him a new one, but failed to include the quarter panel in the box. Looks like there is a problem with all manufactures axles, maybe we're the problem. I have Strange 35 spline in the Barracuda. After 37 years the splines still are straight.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

How many passes? Well, 12 years, 250 passes a year is about 3000 passes! Give or take!

Thanks guys!

I got the same reply from Strange when I asked about swapping side>side with axles....I believe they said.."that would be a TERRIBLE thing to do". I did break a Strange 30 spline at the splines in my old car. I was told when I ordered them that there was NO warranty on the 30 spline axles. They lasted about 10-12 years though. I bought Moser after the failure and no more problems.

i agree that axle is something that you (myself included) would take for granted wouldn't fail at your power/weight level but i guess it's just a reminder that metal can and does break. i don't think it necessarily has anything to do with strange they make a quality product. can't help but wonder if it would have happened to a mark williams though.

if you want to get an idea though of what that axle handles every time you leave the line start doing some math

engine torque x 2 (converter multiplication) x first gear ratio x rear ratio / 2

an example

engine 550 ft lb x converter ratio (2) = 1100 ft lb

1100 x 2.45 (727 first gear ratio) = 2695 ft lb

2695 x 4.56 (rear axle ratio) = 12,289 ft lb

12,289 ft lb / 2 axles = 6147 ft lb

so in this example every time you "hit" that axle it's handling over 6000 foot pounds (the actual "correct" term is pound feet) of torque

they do take some abuse

the collateral damage sure is a bummer though, like you said at least it didn't happen at speed

I have seen many Strange axles twist. Moser axles are some of the cheapest built, I would stay away from them. Mark Williams stuff is the finest and highest quality made. Dyno

I seen your car after the axle breakage sorry to see that
Have you started to fix the quarter panel? Maybe we all should change the axles at 1500 passes

Yes I have it pulled out enough to get the tire on,and I fixed the tub and the trunk. The cosmetic part will be fixed at the body shop in January. For now I am working on getting it rolling again.

Made for an expensive surprise as I already planned to freshen the motor and trans.I'll be ready for April, and Pacific usually starts their year before Mission does so maybe I will see you there!

looks like the axle seal wore a nice stress riser for you...

Do you use a trans brake? That would pile more stress on top of the number James came up with Sorry to here about the damage. Sure is fun making a fast turn off the line, isn't it?
