Our project is to convert a 1976 Dodge Ram former military truck that has a slant 6 to a 360 that came from a 78 Dodge Prospector truck. The slant-6 is a 3-spd on the tree, and the 360 has an automatic transmission.

We'd like to make it into a 360, 3-spd on the tree so minimal changes to the pedals/steering column are done.

Question is, what flywheel should we use if it is the original 360 from the Prospector truck? I.e. is the 360 externally balanced and is their a specific flywheel we need to use to make this work? Can we use a small block bellhousing that will work with the existing slant-6 3spd transmission.

thanks!

You should be able to use any LA360 balanced flywheel. they ARE external balanced, and LA balance is different than the newer Magnum 360 balance.

flywheel size will depend on what size bell you find, but I think truck bell housings should all require a 143 tooth flywheel.

Does the slant 6 have it's own bell housing pattern? or was it the same as all the other small blocks? I personally don't know, but I can tell you that the 3.9L V6 Magnum engines use the same small block mopar housing as all the other small blocks, to include the new generation Hemi stuff.

if the slant has the same bell housing, then you can reuse everything and just get a new flywheel

Slant uses a different bellhousing , he will need a 360LA flaywheel , good luck find a 143 tooth version , and the truck bell that has the pattern for the 3 speed.
