An untested theory: I don't know if this is correct or not, but it makes sense to me. I understand tires were mounted on wheels in a work room above the assembly line, and the tire/wheel assemblies were chuted down to the cars on the line.
All known date codes on all the parts of my car were put in a list, and it turns out the date codes on the wheels were the newest parts on my car.
Scheduled Production Date on fender tag - B08, 11/8/68. One original wheel, date coded 11/11/68. Two original wheels, date coded 11/12/68. Two dealer replacement wheels for those wiped out by wife on a curb, date codes not relevant.
I suspect my car's assembly was done soon after 11/12/68. From Hamtramck it arrived at the Houston dealer on 11/27/68.
My theory is the wheels (standard black painted wheels) were typically fabricated and date coded JIT (just in time) pretty close to the actual assembly date, and if you can get the date codes off your original black wheels, that should be just days before assembly.
Anyone have knowledge or agree or disagree about this?

Scheduled Production Date on fender tag - B08, 11/8/68 Friday One original wheel, date coded 11/11/68 Monday Two original wheels, date coded 11/12/68 Tuesday
It works well for your Charger, but you knew the cars history, did the work and figured it out. Being the only b-body in the plant & all Chargers are 14x5.5" (except HEMI), I'm sure that inventory shuffle was simpler than St. Louis that had 14x5.0" also in the mix. Wheels are all over the place - the black STANDARD steel wheel dates on the a-body line on that same Tuesday might have been from last week.
Do you have your k-frame & engine assembly dates?

This car with the standard black wheels is a Hamtramck Barracuda 340-S. The wheels are 14 x 5.5 with the A body small bolt circle. K frame was dated 11/4/68, and the engine build was 11/1/68.
