I pulled the dual point and installed the Mopar breakerless distributor in the 70 Swinger.
I went to time it and the notch on the harmonic balancer is no where to be found under the strobe light.
I was told I need to "pull the distributor out and then oil pump gear and turn it a tooth".
What's really going on here? Any suggestions?
thanks
Mike

Did it start? If you didn`t move the gear then there is no need to move it.

Leave the gear alone this ain't a chevie.
If you didn't turn the engine over while the distributor was out nothing should have changed and when you put a distributor back in the rotor should have been positioned the same as the one that you took out.

if its starting and running, just loosen the dist and twist it around until you find the mark. no need to move the gear unless the dist vacuum advcance is hitting something preventing correct timing setting you want.

Yes it starts fine. I took the original dual point out long ago so there wasn't a rotor reference point when I put the new distributor in.
I bumped the motor over until I could see the piston in #1, marked where the rotor aimed @ the firewall (per the instructions) put the cap on, ran the wires correctly.
It fired right up and I've run the car up and down the block a few times.
It bucks at low rpm. I haven't mashed the gas yet as I was also told to give the motor time to break in and the McLoud clutch instructions say to give it some break in time too.
That's why I'm asking you guys. I have a Camero guy (who knows everything about everything ) talking in my ear.

Start over at square one. Take out number one plug and hold finger over plu hole. Tap relay to turn engine over to feel compression bring slowly to TDC compression. Pull out Distributor and the slot in the intermediate gear should be parrellel with the engine center line. Insert distributor and the rotor should point to the right front intake bolt. Now isntall distributor cap with the number one terminal in the position of the rotor and follow the firing order around the cap clockwise for SB.
