I run a 85A Denso and never charged the battery in years... make sure you run large enough wire so you dont get line drop(wasting power)... I'm running the same alt on my street rod... I dont like the single wire alts with a built in reg... I prefer the external reg so I can replace the reg if the reg goes bad

i haven't done any testing for this particular situation BUT. depending on the regulator setting on the single wire alternators they may not charge as much as they should. the reason being that the regulator can only sense what's at the output of the alternator so it can't compensate for line losses and loads. most "proper" charging systems have a remote regulator sense wire that is connected at some distance from the alternator such as a buss point so it can maintain the voltage required at that point. the voltage read at the alternator is going to be the highest reading but in reality you want the regulator controlling the field in response to the lower voltage found further out in the system. i have used and still have a single wire on the sig car but imho it isn't really the best way to do it. there was a website with a better explanation than these but i can't find it, however look at these (especially the second one) and you should get a better idea of what i'm trying to convey doesn't matter what brand alternator the theory is the same. personally i think the denso units are probably the best choice http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/remotevoltagesensing.shtmlhttp://bob_skelly.home.comcast.net/~bob_skelly/alternator_conversion/wiring_alternator1.html

He has electic water pump, electic fan , electric fuel pump and a 7 MSD that likes lots of voltage. he has a deep cycle battery also. Them 7 MSD's are hungrey heffers when it comes to power.
Derrick I run number #4 wire alt back to the trunk with my 120 amp denso (from mancini)
I forgot to ask saturday you got lots of grounds. I have a # 10 ground wire that goes motor to ground sliced off and goes back to the battery and is again sliced to the body I beleive this is a good thing. + a number 4 battery to body ground strap motor to body + the motor plate will provide ground. Never too many grounds

Thats why he should run a external reg... tap the sense wire into the biggest draw item in the car to get the highest voltage to the battery

yea I'm trying to get him to go with a three wire Derrick don't like wireing but a few minutes and i'll have a regulator taking it's reading under the dash wired in. I belive in a reg getting it's voltage signal up front not at the back of the alt.

I've been using a 100amp Tuff Stuff Alternator with a 4 ga cable to the cutoff switch. No problems.
Nautilus Racing- We use Superformance gaskets and Turbo Action converters/products.

I just put one in and it kicks a$$. 1100 RPM and 14.5VDC with the electric fan and headlights on. It was purchased at Summit Racing.

My buddy Dodgem is correct I am running electric fuel pump, electric water pump, electric 16" fan as a puller, Moroso 30% reduction crank pulley, MSD 7AL2 ignition box and also run head lights and tail lights when night racing. Not sure on the make of electric fan but has a good sized motor on it and it will drop my idle down when it engages I just checked wire guage going back to battery and it's only an #8. Could this and the reduction crank pulley be the majority of my problem Derrick

Yep... I dont mind over killing the charge lead a bit just to eliminate the line drop... so it weighs a pound more... big deal... if you run the reg sense wire to tee in at a heavy load point it will tell the alt , we need MORE power... on my 85a Denso I'm getting 14.9 volts at the battery at 1600 and up, its 14.5 volts at idle... with the fan and water pump running and of course the 7AL-2

Hey Mr P with that alt does your idle drop when your fan comes on? I have the 90 amp denso from a 90s van she charges great but when my spal fan comes on my idle drops like 200rpms.
No mine doesnt drop... but if you have a big draw item such as your fan you will see some rpm drop when it engages.... the alt is going from 10 amp(we will say) to 50 amps.. thats gonna pull down the engine... I know my buddies truck will drop when his fan kicks in, it draws 40 amps on high... lets face it, as your idling in gear at about 800 rpm your only making about 30 hp so if the alt loads down it might take 5 hp which is a pretty good bit of what the engine is making(power wise)

Eric its a Mopar production alt off of one of the early 90s models... its a Denso that uses a external reg You can see it here sorta... I did make the pulley, it normally has a serpentine pulley

I am running a GM CS130 alternator that I believe is 105amps. It works great, couldn't be happier. With a 5" crank pulley at a 1000rpm idle it charges at 14.3 with the headlights, fuel pump, water pump, fan, and msd running.
Another thing I like about is thats its nothing special or unique. It fits a ton of different GM cars so I can easily get another at the parts store if needed.
