Had this motor for over 25 years. The block is a late 68 casting. 9 25 68. with a build date of 10 5. From what I remember it was from a 69 GTX, but something does not make sense. I think the build date is too early for a 6 pack motor. Also it has the later heavy rods and notched pistons. The guts appear to be factory, however the assembly is internally balanced.Moving on to the ID pad. what is a 440S? The vin appears a little screwy too. There are a few numbers double stamped. The fifth digit appears to be an L stamped over by an M or N. I still have to check the carbs to see what numbers are on them. Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks

Looks like some "hanky panky" went on when someone stamped the VIN # .
Looks like somebody tried to stamp an M code
over the L .
Looks like an Oct 5 finish date , about 5 months before the 69 1/2 M code RM/WM cars .
I don't know, it just plain looks fishy.

RS23 is the 1969 GTX prefix.

The only Sixpack / Six Barrel cars in 1969 were the Super Bees & Road Runners with the A12 package.

was built on or about 10/10/68 ... so the 10-5 makes sense

appears to have been an original 440 4bbl engine from a GTX maybe

Definitely some monkey business going on there , the pistons and rods weren't available in Oct of 68 . Nevermind a 6pk GTX 4 months BEFORE the A12's hit the streets .

Whats the bore size and how far is the piston in the hole ?

I looked at it more closely last night using a jewelers loop. The fifth digit is an L. it appears the block was struck by a tool or something which left two large scratches. You can see they are not parallel. The bore is stock and the pistons appear stock. Maybe someone transplanted the guts from another motor years ago.Question, should I try and remove the two scratches?

Do you have the car it belongs to ? if not the point of removing them would be ?

There is a 15 year gap between you aquiring it and it being originally being built , ANYTHING is possible .

That looks like an upside-down 5, not a 2, in "HP2". They must not have had a full set of numbers.

No it's typical of the 2 I have seen on that pad , look at the 5 , it's not even close .
