i have a thread about this in the questions section, but the title may not grab the attention that this will.

i'm using an old 3/8" drill to prime the engine, and only getting oil to the pass side, and what appears to be the exhaust rocker shaft. the 4th journal on the cam is grooved, so it should get full time oil. there is plenty of oil dripping from the exhaust rockers, none from the intake, and nothing on the drivers side.

now the drill is working hard and turning pretty slow. it was suggested that i get a better drill, which i will try. so a few questions:

should i see oil from the intake rocker shaft as well?

and any suggestions? i'll pull the rocker shaft on the passenger side if i don't see anything after using a better drill, but want to get some ideas as well.

You have to rotate the engine in order for all the passages to get fed.

the #4 cam journal is grooved all the way around. i see oil on the pass side head no matter where the crank is positioned.

Just an FYI.

I tried priming my hemi after it had been rebuilt and had the same problem as you are experiencing. Additionally, I had a friend with the same problem. He completely tore his motor back down and found nothing wrong so he put it back together and the same issue occured.

I tried every easy check pulled the drivers rockers put a rod down to make sure it was clear etc..

The bottom line in both cases is that we had to fire the motors to get oil up to the drivers side. Hope this helps.

Good luck.

i've heard that before, so wanted to really check this out before tearing things down.

i had someone turn it over while i was priming, and i'm now getting oil to both sides, so i'm good.

thanks!

If this is with full time oiling any idea why it needed the extra addit'l turning/priming?

The groove in the cam is not very Big and I'm pretty sure the Hemi cam still has the oil passage thru it so the extra spray when the cam rotates helps . Hemi's use a large amount of oil up top and it's going to go on the path of least resistance .

Yeah I forgot about the fact that twice as many shafts on a Hemi (having never owned nor worked on one) will take twice as much oil

who knows what it was? the hole may have been aligned for the passenger side, and so once it was full the small pressure of the oil from the groove was enough to get it dribbling out. but the groove was only slowly filling the drivers side, and then when hole was aligned for that side it filled it up.

and it may have not been a hole alignment issue either, just enough priming. note some of the earlier posts about this.

anyway, it's primed, oiled, and hopefully will be on the dyno soon!

thanks for the help!
