WOW.... So sorry to see this post, Dustin! That sucks! not much more to say. My first thought: go big block. Build a low-deck 451 or 470. You'll go just as fast, and it'll be more durable. But I also realize you probably have a lot of small block stuff left over that would cut the cost of a new motor...... tough call. Where's the old 408 these days???

My thought as well, but I have ZERO big block stuff.
The old engine was a nothing special 340, cast piston, stock rod, stock crank. Its got well over 1000 passes on it and 5 years of abuse. I robbed the heads and other parts out of it to build this engine, so its not ready to go at all. I think its racing days are over, still runs great, but needs to go in a cruiser, not my car..... apparently i'm hard on stuff.

Yep solid cam, 263/268@.050 .... Now its a "3/4 race" cam No signs of float really, when it got hotter in the summer It would occasionally miss slightly in high gear, that went away as the air got better again. I'll check that spring for pressure when I get a chance. Not really in the mood to touch it the last couple days.

I do believe you've got a good shot at winning the winter carnage thread contest.
Yeah, it's got a smallblock.

Looking at the stem you can see very clear indications of crack propagation followed by ductile failure. There may have been a surface defect on the one side that caused it to crack, maybe from machining, etc..
I think this illustrates what you are saying.

Too bad you weren't closer. I would work a deal with you on my W2 408 motor. It would be up to the task of 200 passes a year. Just pulled it because the hemi is done. I put about 8 passes on it as it was just built...

Thanks Jim! that does a much better job than my explanation.
