I have a factory 66 Hemi Block and heads. I want to put the heads on but can't find the reasoning in using a $200 arp bolt kit. Does anyone know of anyone who make a factory style head bolt kit. Thanks.

No way would I use anything other than a factory engineered bolt for holding down the heads on a 426 Hemi! I am in the same situation with my 66 Hemi, I am using the original bolts though I usually never use old bolts, but they are just too darn expensive.

They aren't JUST BOLTS , it's a bolt AND stud kit and they are engineered for the application. I guess you could just go to the hardware store and get grade 8 chinese bolts , tell us how that works out ...

hehe you could always buy some quality material and make your own studs on a lathe

Put me in the buy quality Grade 8 bolts category. If you have old head bolts, then I'd measure the shanks and see if there is a necking down (smaller diameter) to see if it has stretched. If it has stretched, then it's junk. As for the studs, I hear that the SS Hemi guys are only torqueing them to 35 ft-lbs, so that makes me question why they would need the ARP studs?

Now, what I would want to make sure of is the thread engagement is the same as was used when honing the bores with a torque plate. I'd want to use the same torques and bolts/studs used in honing if at all possible. Given the tall height of a Hemi head, that may not be feasible to use the same bolts/studs.

I just dont get it....$200 for a very high quality set of fasteners isnt too much to pay, IMO. They are superior quality to anything that came from the factory. A set of used originals might have been cycled a multitude of times-which will compromise their ability to properly clamp. The nice thing about the Hemi is that the headbolts are all hidden so you dont have to worry about it looking incorrect, either.

Its a no brainer in my book.

Wow: This is why I don't buy stuff that other people have "rebuilt, restored or repaired". I'm amazed at some of these high dollar paint job show cars that I've witnessed with leaking carbs, unsafe brakes and steering etc. Just to save a few bucks I guess.

Seems like every post on this site now ends with...."on a budget".

Sure everyone has monetary limitations, but i'm in the camp of "do it once and do it right"....

Mopar Mike,
I remember thinking the same thing when I was putting my first Hemi together. I use the ARP bolt kit on all of my engines. It really isn't that expensive if you consider the fact that it is a stud/bolt package.

If I was building a stock engine, I would consider a set of used stock head bolts if I could find them.

I went thru the head bolt hassle myself...
There are alot of people using aftermarket bolts successfully BUT truthfully the stock bolts are designed to have the proper stretch (preload) and are undercut to allow clearance in the factory casting

I had new bolts from Barton that had excessive runout despite returning them 3 times I then purchased some very nice, high quality bolts from FHO.

FHO bolts are better suited to aftermarket or newer castings - these have larger bolt openings

The FHO bolts were tight around the base on my stock heads which pushed on the casting enough to cause alignment issues. I Could have redrilled all bolt holes for clearance but they were also a tad long for an original block and heads, with a steel shim head gasket.

It's a long winded way to say I found some NOS stock bolts instead.

The MP ones used to be very poor quality - I haven't seen any in the past 3 years - they may have improved since ?

Before I found the Chrysler bolt's I was going to buy them from Arruza

Aggrivating but that's what happened to me

That price is cheap, repo bolts for the out side of a hemi is around $400. Look at the store bought grade 8 chinese bolts this way. A grade 8 is a grade 8, right? Would you fly over the ocean in an airplane with chinese bolts that meet speck holding the wings on?
