This may have been discussed previously, can anyone confirm if Hemi Superbird air cleaner had a shield or not as have seen both ways, and a picture of the breather and connection to air cleaner would be appreciated.

Thanks

I cant help you with HEMI car information but if nobody posts a picture of the breather by early tomorrow I can give you something to peak at before noon EST.

Yes, a Hemi Superbird is "supposed" to have a shield in front of it. It would have been normal for any car NOT equipped with fresh-air (N96) to have a shield, whether it be 6bbl or 8bbl...

This particular air cleaner had a notch cut into it for some reason, but it shouldn't be there.. This particular picture the car has an incorrect breather on the pass. rear valve cover.

Incorrect base, but proper breather on valve cover... Now, I'm sure there were those examples that got out without the shield...

Thanks for the photos, It makes sense that non N96 Hemi cars would have the shields, I have notice on some the same pictures you posted the difference, think the non shield pic you included was from the 5400mi survivor (sold mecum) other couple other Hemi birdsI notice without shields was B5 survivor (sold Barrett) and Lemon Twist Bird to be sold Vegas Barrett, there was the recent sale of H Bird at Mecum that did have the shield.

I haven't seen a factory original non shield example on any non fresh air car. What I suspect is that the examples people are showing are either modified originals, original N96 units added incorrectly, or reproductions. With such a simple item to remove and change, and being quite valuable, I can see where a car headed to auction might lose it's original before being let go. I've seen TONS of similar things happen with auction cars that had rare/valuable/simple to remove parts.

Makes sense with the removals. What is your guess on percentage of N96 cars versus Non fresh air cars with that style air cleaner?

I believe HEMI Superbirds may have been delivered without the shield, but that would've been a mistake, due to availability or simply human error. Should a restoration reflect a human error or undocumented/mythical lack of a correct part at production?
* Before the Superbirds existence there were NO non-N96 HEMI cars being built at the Lynch Rd. assembly plant.
* The shield'd non-N96, or N95 equipped air cleaner would've been a RARE sight at Lynch Rd. pre-Superbird, but would've been in the parts system & readily available a few miles away in Hamtramck.
* Anyone have a broadcast sheet or window sticker showing a N95 - "CA emissions" (& NO tip) - Lynch Rd. assembled HEMI car.

HEMI Superbirds account for nearly 1/4th of HEMI b-body production in 1970 & all were built during November & December of '69.
I find it likely, that the Lynch Rd. plant had sufficient production planning info with enough lead time to have "SHIELDED" air cleaners on hand for HEMI Superbird production.

There aren't a bunch of HEMI Superbirds with the firewalls punched with "AIR GRABBER" holes are there? So, they had to have procedures in place to build the ~2000 'Birds.

I would put a larger percentage of them removed "in-the-day" for dual "firestarter" or chrome air cleaners.

(~135) All HEMI Superbirds non-N96
(~125) All HEMI Charger R/Ts (& 1-500 ) non-N96
(~280) Most HEMI Challenger R/Ts non-N96 (# is WAG)
(~?30) & a few "CA emission" HEMI Runners, GTXs, Coronet R/Ts and Bees (# is WAG)

~570 Sheilded HEMI air cleaners for '70 production (~37%).
~725 "SHAKER" HEMI air cleaners for '70 production (~47%).
~260 "RAMCHARGER"/"AIR GRABBER" HEMI air cleaners for '70 production (~16%). (Also used on all (non-Charger) of '69 HEMI production)

Thanks for stats, sounds unlikely that H Birds came without sheilds, it is surprising how many Birds / non N96 cars you see restored and by some of the well known shops (maybe originals removed after for resale ?) that are completed without the sheilds, and considering there was almost 3 times as many Hemi cars came with the sheilds originaly.

Were the sheilds attached to non sheild base plates or manufactured as one piece?

Thanks for sharing that shot, see little LimeLight hiding under that old black paint, would you have a shot from the other side, curious on angle of hose off breather and connection to air cleaner?

Is this car still hiding in the barn or been polished up?

..... but, wouldn't the 12 MONTH/12,000 MILE WARRANTY have run out by then?

Just what did the restricted warranty on 6bbl and Hemi cars cover or not cover ?

It's still sitting exactly the way it shows in this picture. Current owner bought it I know at least over 20 years ago, and has never heard it run (came out of the Toledo Ohio area)
FJ5 , Hemi, 4spd , blk int , console.
The black underhood is actually that spray on rust proofing and not paint

Dan,
I can't answer that one. (Going off of memory so don't shoot me) but when we went to look at the car. Then owner told us the 1st owner scattered the shortblock and Mopar replaced it, Not 100% sure WHO paid for said shortblock. And I'm not 100% sure the time frame it was replaced. Thats been a while back.

It's NOT the original shortblock.but it does have the original 1970 top half

you and several others.
I've been trying to get the current owner to at least put a running drivetrain in it ( he has several on hand) and drive it. But it just sits,,,and sits,,,,,and sits. At least he's had it stored indoors all this time

What a shame.. I was like that... 3 out of 4 cars just sat, sat and sat till that one day I was going to hit the lotto to fix them all. Now I've seen the light and I have 2 cars and 1 that runs, runs, runs..

And now, money to spare for the other one to get it to run, run, run..
