I bought a new hurst pro-matic shifter for a truck(taller handle)

the problem I have is I cant get it to adjust correctly. I can get it to either up shift to each detent and not down shift all the way into the detent or vis-versa.

I can un-hook the cable at the shifter and shift it by hand and get it to shift correct each way but that is by feel hitting each detent.

watching the cable at the shifter,I can move the cable 1/4" or more before it moves the shift lever. seems to have slop inside the cable itself. I push/pull it 1/4" or more either way with out the shift lever moveing from the detent.

any one else have this kind of trouble? is there a better replacement cable?

are there any adjustments to the cable only to remove this slop it has?

200 bux for a shifter and it has issues.

any suggestions?

TIA

Did you install the torqueflight lever that came with the shifter to the trans?

yes, installed the trans lever, and bracket for cable on the pan rail.

with eyes on the trans lever,I can move the cable in the truck at the shifter by hand and get play in it but it does not show it moving at the trans.

I have made sure the loop in the cable is not flexing/moveing/burn/scuffed/bent/skined...ect.

it comes thru floor and wraps around back of engine going into the bracket from front of trans.(I talked to you about that when I installed it stumpy and went over adjusting it.)

it did it with the manaul VB and now with a stock VB.

I can get it to shift from 1st to 2nd by shifting the handle 2x,shift from 2nd to 3rd by shifting handle 2x again. I can be in 3rd,pull handle back 1x and nothing again and then it down shifts, same thing going back to 3rd,shift it 2x

when in 3rd,I shift to N and it satys in 3rd till I lift handle and go just a little forward the it goes to N.

I can then pull handle back to N positon and it stays in N.

I lift handle and shift from N to R and stays in N till I go past R a little bit.

I can lift handle and shift from N to park and it locks in park ok.

I have adjusted this a 1/2 turn at a time with the 2 lock nuts at the bracket on the rail pan and have moved the adjuster on the end of cable to trans lever.

exhasted every setting combo I can do for a yr now and only can get it to shift up good or down good but not both. unless I double shift it or use vise grips and feel for it.

I give up, its a sloppy cable is the only thing I can see wrong at this point.

I unhook it from the shift.clamp on a pair of vise grips and shift it by hand/feel and its dead on up or down, but I pull or push the slack out before it ever clicks in/out of the detent.

trans is work good, firm shifts,I have to get this crap fixed so when i get the manaul VB back from CRT the shift is working and adjusted dead on.

I will trade the complete shifter and parts for a good auto shift colum and linakge...oh! wait,i have the linkage not a colum. I will throw in the small vaise grips I use to shift with at the moment also.

does the end of the cable screw on maybe and it needs tightend up?

maybe it the shifter not the cable? toss the shifter and just have a cable with visegrips in the floor???

If your Hurst is like my B&M, shift the shifter all the way to the lowest low gear position. Install and adjust the cable with the lever in "Park"..

I had the same problem with my B&M. I bought a second 1 and had the same problem.. Then I read the directions and found where I was goofing up..

I am truckless..

On the trans end of my shift cable there are two adjustments you can make. One is where the cable housing goes through the bracket and the other is the cable end is threaded. The cable end has a stud that goes into the shift lever that is held tight with a lock nut. That is used for the small adjustments. The other is where I think you need to do the adjustment you need to make the shifter work. Try loosening the two lock nuts holding the cable housing to the bracket and move the housing toward the front of the truck away from the lever the 1/4" you need. Then tighten the lock nuts down. That should take up the slack.

It sounds like it may just be a bad cable. Summit and Jegs and ebay sell replacements. One other thing. What side of the floor bracket do you have the cable mounting tab on. The inside or the out side of the bracket. I'm sure you have checked the cable for soft spots caused by heat which is the only problem I have ever had with cable shifters.

at the shifter? the cable has a tab that bolts to the shifter bracket. I think it can only go one way for the screw/bolt.

I will go pull the cover again and have a look.

yea checked the cable for damage and it has none from my use or install.

i think I will R&R the cable and spend a few bux on a replacement. i dont see any other choise right now. I sure cant get it to shift right, that much i do know.

Looks right to me so I guess a new cable is the only idea I have left.

Did you try to put the little cable bracket onto the other side of the main frame??

I put one of those in a car a few years ago and that thing had to be one of the hardest things to get right. I can't remember the exact procedure but just one turn on the threaded adjustment at the cable on the trans lever made a difference. Works great when set up right but will not hit the gears right when off. One thread at a time at the lever is the trick. Keep cussing and keep adjusting. lol

I thought about the tab and then looked up the shifter install instructions. Hurst says mount the tab on the inside like you have it and B&M says on the outside.I have mine mounted like yours.
