I am having a problem with reverse gear in a Protrans it will work fine when the car is idling but if you put power to it it will stop like you put the brakes on. I have rebuilt the clutch packs changed the valve body, pump seal rings and gasket and convertor. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Does it have a trans brake ?

Reverse is the rear band applied and the front clutch applied , if one is not doing it's job you'll have no reverse. Check the rear band and it's apply servo piston since you don't mention that .

No it doesn't have a trans brake. I rebuilt the servo's and they both move freely. I have reverse it just stops or binds.

Sounds like it's in two gears at once. Does the car creep forward in Neutral? If so, the rear clutch isn't fully releasing.

If it doesn't creep in Neutral, the VB/case mating surface around the accumulator might be warped allowing cross flow between the rear servo and the kickdown servo.

I had a similar problem after I rebuilt a trans, put in reverse rolls ok..step on gas in reverse it would lock up or bind ..would not move..

I had used one of the plastic style sealing rings on the main input shaft right next to the rear clutch pac..and it had gotten torn during assembly...replaced the sealing ring and trans still working today..

I found the problem with help from Dave at Protrans the pump stator was cracked. I had figured it was cross feeding so I changed everything else except the pump now I know what to check in the future. Thanks for the input!
