Went to Beaver Springs last weekend and after going a few rounds the car developed a vibration after letting off at the finish line. Got worse the next run (we lost anyway), so we put it away and checked it at home (didn't notice anything out of the ordinary at the track, but knew something was wrong). Got it home and pulled the driveshaft (it was OK) but found the pinion nut loose. It has been on there for 4 years with no problems, but the nut had no crush left as a locknut. Oil, gears and bearings look and feel good. Should I clean the treads use oil on the face of the washer and nut, and loctite red on the threads or buy a new locknut and use loctite for a little extra insurance? Any reason why this thing loosened (I used the Mancini pinion locking tool and a BF breaker bar to tighten it when I set it up).

As you may recall, we were having problems with tire shake and I'm wondering if that caused it to loosen.

Thanks for the help

I would check the U joints and pay a driveshaft shop to make sure the shaft is properly balanced. Get a new nut and use loctite red for extra insurance. Some guys like to stake the nut, which is effective, but then you will likely do damage to the threads when you take it apart. I dont stake the nut and have never had a problem and I build a fair amount of D60's.

Thanks. Driveshaft is a chrome-moly unit and u-joints are free with no play. You can drive this car at 135 mph with one arm out the window and a finger on the wheel it is so smooth.

That happened to me some years back on my street car which was a 340 Dart. The driveshaft actually fell out while driving as the nut came off. It was night and believe it or not my buddy found the nut in the gutter and we stuck it back on with pliers I had and drove it to the station we worked at to fix it for that night. I ended up putting a new nut and washer on with red loctite. Never came loose again but ever since then I use loctite on all my pinion nuts. I just used loctite on my buddies pinion nut I set up a few months back also. I dont know why mine came off that night but it did not hurt anything as everything was fine in the rear. Ron

Thanks guys. I'll order a new nut and use Loctite red.
