Customer brought in a freshly built 383 in his Road Runner with a ticking issue on the pass side. Its a show car with Cast iron heads, hyd flat tappet cam with 1.5 adj roller tip rockers. I adjusted the drivers side first with no issues and when I started on the pass side most those lifters had about .015"-020" lash ???? I then took a drill and primed the engine to pump up those lifters so I could set the preload but noticed while working on that side those lifters were going down very quickly. All the while the drivers side lifters stayed pumped up. I pulled a couple easy to get to lifters on the pass side and everything looked great. And then for s-n grins I added a half turn of preload to see what would happen. The engine still ticks. The engine cold starts with 70 psi of oil pressure and will then climb to 85 with some throttle. If the batch of lifters were bad I figured the drivers side would have shown issues. If the lifter bores where bad on the pass side I doubt I would see 70 psi at start up. Any input is apreciated cause I'm twizel'd at this point. My biggest concern is if I tell the customer that a new set of lifters are needed and they don't cure the problem I'll be eating 16 lifters in a bowl of milk for breakfast.

Have you checked the lifter bores? Any change they were machined too large on that side?

Did a cam bearing turn?

I couldn't say for sure, but the thought did cross my mind. I did pull the pushrods out and primed the engine at 70 psi looking for any sort of hemorage around the lifter bores but didn't see anything out of the ordinary.

The #2 int and #8 exh were the loudest so I decided to replace all the lifters figuring that should solve the problem. Once the new lifters were installed and the engine primed, again the #2 int and #8 exh lifters will not pump up fully. The others are all fine now.

I'm now thinking the problem may now be within the block.

Any thoughts?
