I have a 64 Plymouth Fury I'm working on. It originally came with a trunion style 8 3/4 rear. The one with the bolt in the end of the axles. I want to switch to a new style 8 3/4 and was wondering if I can swap the guts of a new rear into the old housing. Will the parts fit or do I need to use the new style housing with new style internals? Thanks for the help. TD

Swap in a '65 axle. There are length differences. Or get a custom set of axles for your '64 housing.

Your center section will work but your axles will be too long.

I used a complete 65 axle assembly in my 63 and it fit just right. 8-3/4 of course. Ron

You can use aftermarket shafts(good upgrade anyway). If the green style bearings (non tapered) are used, the shafts will fit. There's only one difference between the housings besides length. The in area for the seal is not deep enough in the axle tube to take a seal and a standard bearing. The green bearing does not require the housing seal. I have done this a few times with good results.

Thanks for the responses. Looks like I'll use the old housing with new axles and green bearings. Tom

October issue of Car Craft has got a pretty good article on 8 3/4"s that might help you out some.

I believe Doc Diff has the conversion axles in stock.

Isn't the housing end bolt pattern slightly different between the earlier and 65+ stuff?

The splined axle housing I had was different.

I talked with him at the Nats about this same topic.
