I found a pretty decent 8 1/4 rear end on CL for what seems to be a fair price. However, the rear end came out of a Volare. What are the differences between an 8 1/4 out of an FMJ body and an A body? Will it bolt up or will modifications be required? Thank you!

Edit: Looking at the pictures they look like 7 1/4 rear ends but I'm still curious about the info...

Is the rear in your car bad, or do you just want to change to big bolt pattern?
..... don't fix it if it ain't broken

IIRC F-bodies are too wide for an abody (F-bodies & '66-'67 B-bodies are similar).

Much too wide and the perches are different in both width and construction since the F-body used rubber isolators. Take a pass on that one.

Did that to Nephews 75 Duster when the 7 1/4 went belly-up. About 3" wider so you have to allow for it. We just used the original steel wheels & they still fit fine. The A-body rear sits in some on the Dusters anyway in relation to the quarters. On a dart I dunno if it would work. We used the F-body driveshaft also, length was right on. Been in there for 6 or 7 years now.

If you're going to go through the work of replacing the rear end why not just go ahead with an 8 3/4 swap?

It's not bad. It's fine, no whining or anything. I am just casually looking around craigslit for any really good deals for big bolt swaps. I'm in no rush at all.

And stumpy, I'd take (and prefer) an 8 3/4 over an 8 1/4 if I could find one for a fair/good deal on craigslist. There aren't many around locally (espescially for an A-body). So far I have only found an E-Body one with sway bars for $600, but that's way too wide anyways.

if you want to convert to large bolt pattern the 8.25 rear is the way to go, and cheap.

honestly your better off finding a v8 parts car and swapping everything over at once.

around here on CL there is a 74 dart 318v8 disc brakes, 875 complete i think the add was, which means 500 in my book.
