I know someone is doing them as I saw them as Carlisle. I bought some of the correct rivets from them. I thought is was Just Dashes, but I'm not 100%.

Is your tray the slide up and down or tip out type?
Is there a source for replacement pads on the slid up and down type?
Seems every one I have found suffered the same faith as mine, people did not know how to open, pulled from bottom of pad and separated the vinyl from the foam.

Best way is for you to (1.) drill out the rivets, separate the cover from the zinc plated ash receiver, and paint the cover the same as the rest of your dash. (2.) Send out the painted cover with the ash receiver to a vendor so that (3.) the receiver can be re-plated and (4.) both parts can be re-riveted back together.

Otherwise you'll get paint mis-match on the front cover compared to the rest of the dash in case of two painters.

I'm pretty sure the cover was painted at the same time as the dash at the factory, then riveted to the ash receiver.

One of these days I'll find a plater who can do my ash receiver correctly. "Correctly" means upping the current a bit so the zinc goes on in tiny droplets with a satin look, rather than the normal, smooth, shiny coating of electro-zinc. Meantime I am already set up to do the factory style tube rivets.

Alternatively, if you are never going to use the ash receiver, it could be painted with imitation electro-zinc rattle can paint, without removing the rivets. It might be best to paint just the corroded area of the receiver, not the whole thing, to avoid tedious masking.

If you don't see two dolphins, you need a vacation.

Doesn't seem too complicated.

Scott, just have it plated by your carb plate source when you send a load over.

In the past I have simply plated the whole unit, did not drill out rivets and separate receiver. Then painted appropriate areas as necessary with careful masking. Eliminates the need to replace rivets. No issue with later paint adhesion with good surface prep.

Yea I can get them plated but the carb parts plater doesn't do the best job on larger or more complex shaped items. Crazy, that plate the entire thing idea is a good one! I might just give it a try, I have lots of cores.

The satin look your looking for is not directly linked to amperage alone, but more to do with material starting finish and the use of brighteners. Typically when applying zinc people want brighteners to achieve that shiny finish. Next time you shop around for a plater be very direct with your desired outcome, and ask to see work.

Doing my own plating I can tell you it takes trial and error, as well as countless tests to get the finish desired.

the tray I had done by Mikes was similiar to Scotts core in condition or maybe a little better. I was just a little disappointed with the fact that the inside of the ash receptacle is not plated more of a grayish finish.
Ill see if I can remember to post pics tomorrow.

Obviously the better the core is = the better the finished product will be.
If it has pits in it before it gets plated, it'll only be amplified after'
Just as an example, with time, plating , rivets and materials . This is probably in the $100-$125 range.
PROVIDED your painting multiple pieces at the same time to spread materials costs out over multiple items. This was done at the same time I did the steering column pieces and dash frame, all for the same car.
