Hi, after building a 557 Hemi with World block and Aluheads, I notice some small leakage of coolant from between head and block on the exhaust side. Worst in both ends. Overnight there is a leakage on both sides of between 0,5 and 1cc. The engine is not yet started. It uses composite type brand X red/brown head gaskets that are lacquered. I added a thin layer of RTV on both sides where all water and oil holes are.
Clamping force with ARP studs, at 75-80 lbft.

Yes, I know it is Friday the 13th, but it started earlier.....

Will this dissapear when engine gets hot? Or, will I have to buy better gaskets, then which type/part number?

Thanks!

WOW, a water leak before you even started it? That's bad. Makes me think it might be something besides a head gasket. How else could it leak with no pressure yet? People on this side of the pond used to use Fel-Pro's normally sprayed with copper coat but lately everybody uses Cometic. At first they said put them on dry, now some people say spray them with copper coat. Cometic says they want a smooth finish on the surfaces. Take it apart and try again. Get a straight edge and make sure the decks and heads are flat. Set the heads on the block with no gasket and make sure the dowel pins aren't holding it up. Make sure the studs aren't running out of threads. Sorry for your problem.

Hi, and thank you for your response. The dowel pins are OK, but as these are new parts I did not check them for straightness (Yes, I am dumb). But I searched the Moparts web, and I am not the first to have such a problem. And I know cometic seal the cylinder pressure real well, but can be more dangerous to water leaks. So I will stick to a soft type of gasket. Anybody know the part number of a FelPro gasket at about .040" thickness which fits the 4,5" Hemi?

Thanks again from rainy Norway

Use a little blue Hylomar on both sides of the gaskets but just around the water holes.

Thanks to all of you. I thought of first firing it up and see if it stops leaking. If not, trying a bottle of Bar's Leak. It is a real hazzle to dismantle the heads from the engine which is installed in a mint 69 Charger. Any objections?

My old 528 wedge did that, (Apples and oranges I know) Heads weren't flat. You could try warming it up and re-torquing but if it was me I'd be looking to find out why it's leaking.

Chances of fixin the leak with just firing the engine up are minimal or worse....

You will propably have more mess around the engine bay when you fire the engine up. Bite the bullit and find the reason why it is leaking !
