Does anyone have an opinion on what paint to use for a 1970 EB7 Jamaica blue car? Just wondering what is the best quality and color match. I use PPG for the most part, but they don't have a formula for it in their DBC base/clear. DuPont Chromabase, BASF Diamont, and PPG Omni all have formulas, but I don't know how close any of them match, and I've never used any of them to know which I'd prefer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I can tell you how my 70RR was painted. I don't represent this as the "correct" method. The guy that painted my car used a PPG red chromatic sealer, then PPG B7 shopline basecoat. I was told (didn't verify it myself) that shopline was the only PPG product that could accommodate the B7 mix.

There is another member on this forum whose 70 B7 Cuda was painted the same way by the same guy. If he sees this he may chime in.

Thats the answer I'd go with.. PPG's color matches are usually better on the vintage Mopar colors than Dupont or BASF.. Shopline is decent stuff & it's the clear on top than effects durability...

My 70 B7 blue Charger was painted with Delthane. They had a formula for it. I have no idea how close it is to original but I like it.

yes rich, i will chime in LOL.... You are correct about the simulated red oxide primer. mike used a PPG 2k RED Chromatic sealer/primer to duplicate the factory red found under most cars original paint. He did use the shopline B7 base from PPG. After that he used glamour clearcoat over which is a very high quality clear. I referenced this info from the receipts that were sent from southern autocolor. as for using a single stage paint, you guys might want to contact MIke Mancini because, he just did a OE gold 1970 Duster in B7 within the last year or two. He probably could tell you what is the best single stage to use if you want the more correct finish on your car. here is the CUDA!!

Thanks for the help, guys. I'll probably go with the Shopline. The cars really look good in the pics.

I'm sanding on original paint 72 Challenger right now and the red oxide is covered by a coat of grey primer, then the paint.

Take care,

FWIW,

My 70 coronet was the exact same.
I believe the red oxide was a primer,
the grey was a sealer and then the paint...

Here's what I found kinda cool when I redid my 70 Coronet.

I painted mine the original color (B5 - PPG Deltron 2K base/clear)

I used DPLF Red Epoxy primer over the bare steel.
Then I sprayed 4 coats of K36 as a light grey build primer
blocked that with 180 (using a guide coat),
resprayed about 3 coats of K36 blocked again with 320
(with guide coat)
After blocking, the red epoxy base
shows through the light grey primer and the whole
car had this really cool bluish tint to it...

The color came out great!

I don't know if that is what the factory intended for
it's blue cars (B3/B5/B7/B9 etc) or if it
just a coincidence...

But I thought it was cool and the results
were great...

Best quality would be Glasurit.
