After having my 1970 Dodge Coronet RT restored and driving it for the past 2 summers I have had an ongoing problem with replacing starter relays. To date, I have replaced at least 6 of them. I am running a stock 440 4 bbl with an auto. trans. I installed a mini starter during the resto on the car. The wiring is all new from front to rear. The brand of starter relays I am using is STANDARD. I have bought them at the local AUTO VALUE auto parts store. From what they tell me, one of them is made in China and the other is made in the US. I have tried both of them with the same results! Failure!!!!! I just replaced one a week ago, and 3 days later upon turning the key, nothing! I have traced all the wiring several times and it matches the service manual routing. Anyone else had this nagging problem? Any suggesstions would be appreciated.

I doubt that all the relays were bad, did you check the plug under the steering coluum and the firewall plug?
Also you sure the neutral safety switch is not giving you trouble? Mine sometimes I have to wiggle my shifter to get it right so the car will start.

you have an issue in the car somewhere, i highly doubt that you got 6 bad relays.

Thanks for your replies. I will check the neutral safety switch and everything else under the car!

Hold the key in the start position while moving the shifter around, you may need to shifter to neutral or even drive to get the starter to crank.... Keep your foot on the brake...

Just getting ready to post a thread when i saw this

Same issue on my 71 Superbee. Actually this has been an issue for many years. But this last time really has me stumped.

Starter actually engaged while driving the car. Yes you read that correctly ! So i popped the hood after i shut off the motor , the engine still cranking over so i disconnected the battery . Tapped on the starter relay and hooked up the battery again. Started the car then i removed both the ground wire and yellow ignition wire from the starter relay and proceeded down the road . The damn starter relay engaged the starter again while driving . Got it back home and put in another Standard Brand relay and has been fine ever since - I go through these about once a year just driving in summer - Decided to rip one apart the other day - All that is happening inside is the contact points are basically welding themselves together burning out the contacts inside - I have had these fail to the point of no start , and on occasion when starting the car the starter still stays engaged after releasing the key from the start postion - Go tap on the starter relay , everything is fine

All wiring new
Newer Ignition Switch a few years back
Neutral Safety Switch is new along with wiring
Looked over bulkhead connector and cleaned , nothing looked bad
Starter new

Honestly I think its just these cheap Standard Brand Relays or what else would cause such a high resistance burning out these contact points inside the relays ???

BWD is an offbrand of Standard correct ???

How about Napa ???

You won't be able to see anything from underneath, if the car starts when you move the shifter around then you need to adjust the shift linkage a little.

You can also ground the connector on the starter relay that the brown wire attaches to eliminate the neutral safety switch for trouble shooting.

Stater relays are getting cheaper but it's possible your starter is faulty and drawing too much current. You can measure the current with a clip on current meter and compare it to the specs for that starter, (most are 80-90 Amps, free running, in the 69 service manual), or take it to a starter shop who can check it out.
