Having trouble with my 72 Challenger 360 engine.. key buzzer goes on.. all lights work, seems to be plenty of battery power.. sometimes I would hear a click, or spuratic clicks, then i would try it again and it starts fine.. now i get no sound or any responce.. turn the key to start and nothing.. doesn't seem to be making it to the starter, I have one of those tiny replacement starters in there now to fit in next to the headers i put in.. the original was just way to big.. anyone know where i should look or advice.. thanks

Try holding the key in the start positiion and move the shifter from park to neutral and see what happens. It could be as simple as a linkage adjustment.

make sure all the large cable terminals/posts are clean both the positive and negative. If no go jump the "grn" terminal on the starter relay to ground & see if it cranks. try Stumpys trick of holding the key to start and moving the shifter (if automatic) thru all the positions

Starter relay on the drivers fender or firewall. Neutral safety switch on the drivers side of the trans, an electrical plug in

Neutral switch supplies the ground for the starter relay when in park or neutral. It also is what makes the back up lights come on in reverse. It's the three prong connection on the trans. Center terminal is ground and the two outside terminals are in and out for back up light power. http://www.moparts.org/Tech/Archive/auto/5.html

prob. the contacts in the solinoid and plunger are bad on the mini starter . you can just replace those .

to test it you can make sure you are getting a signal at the small wire on the starter with a test light.if the test light lights up when you turn the key to crank most likely the contacts in the solinoid.
