I have a 72 demon with a 408 with mild j heads.it has a new griffin radiator with electric fan. i drive it on the street alot and in traffic it will go over 220 but while driving down the road it will drop back to 185. i have tried the most powerful single fan summit has on their site and still does it. i tried water wetter and it did nothing. any help would be appreciated.

Start with the basics. Does the system hold pressure? Do you have a spring in the lower hose to keep it from collapsing? Thermostat stuck?

Yes it holds good pressure and it does have the spring in lower hose. It ran so hot a few times it vapor locked even with an electric fuel pump. I was wondering if the stroker makes more heat than a standard stroke 360 because i have never had this much trouble keeping any other small blocks cool.

Get your self a set of spal twin 11" fans. This will cure your problem. I drive mine all over in rush hour traffic not a problem. This is with a 422 cu in small block.

Does the heater work OK? Heater core not plugged up? What's the timimg set at at idle? sometimes to much initial timing at idle can cause overheating issue.

a puller fan is the best for cooling. it should have a shroud too.

I have a 16 inch puller fan on it now and when i first put it on i had it blowing through instead of pulling the air. didn't take me long to realize it was wrong when the temp went to 200 in a couple of miles. I have done alot dumber things than that though.

hi
185 at speed tells us you need to check your Low speed circulation and air flow !

what water pump r u using ?

pulley combo ?

look in rad whith engine warm , is it circulating at idle ?

pump speed may b a little slow ?

what timing settings and curv are you using ?

idle speed ?

stall speed ?

trany cooler ?

I run my car with the distribtor locked out at 36 degrees. Spals come with shroud so make mounts you are good to go. I use them, my buddy with a 555 bbc now uses them after his 16 in puller would go to 215*. My other buddy uses them in his shoebox nova 406 sbc with f2 procharger.(711 rwhp) My other buddy uses then in his 499 69 dart. We all drive on the street alot and do not have overheating issues.Spal 11" fans and 26x19 raditors are the only thing we have in common. We all have elctric water pumps too.

Ok before i spent any money i just used what i had laying around the garage. First i put on one of the light weight plastic fixed fans with the thickest spacer i had. It was about 1 1/2 from the radiator. I drove to town and it took awhile before it hit 210 in traffic. I didn't have a shroud to try so i added the electric fan to the front to push through while the stock fan pulled the air. I didn't think it would work but i drove it in heavy traffic during the hottest part of the day and it never got over 180. thanks for all your help guys. one funny thing i had never seen before was when i got in the car yesterday it was so hot outside and the car had not been started yet but the gauge was up over 120.
