Hey Gang, Figured I'd run this by you. I've started the process of getting my buddies '71 back together. I'm a learnin' when it comes to the E's. I'm installing a 22" radiator in my friend's '71 Challenger R/T v-code. Someone at one point in time installed a 26" radiator which is incorrect. We found a 22" for a '71 E-body, but it is for a 383.. Right now, no biggie, it fits... There is a slight complication that the top of the fan blade slightly hits the shroud at the top. The fan blade as an intention that looks as if it is there for clearance of the shroud. Looks like the car has been hit as some point in its life. The driver's side upper mounting point for the radiator looks like it's bowed backwards and the radiator upper transverse support looks bent. Maybe it is a case of things ever so off it causes the fan to rub the shroud. Also, maybe, just maybe there's a different fan I need? What is the length of a viscous fan blade on a car equipped with a 22" inch radiator?
Any of you guys out there with a 22" radiator, what is the gap measurement from the back of the core support to the top tank front face. I can use that as a start of tweaking and fixing..... Thanks.. Troy

1 more> Top of fan blade rubs against the shroud ever so slightly

3 more: vertical portion of core support at upper driver's side mounting point doesn't seem to be true. Looks as if the car's been hit during its lifetime. Maybe this, along with what appears to be a curved upper core support could have negative effects on the radiator-to-shroud/fan positioning.

I'm not sure if 22" radiator cars had fan clutches.
383 b & ebody combo: 3443961 radiator, 2120510 spacer 1.60", 2863224 7-blade 18" dia. fan, 2998328 shroud
The shroud was designed for a 18" fan, if you have a 215/216 they're 18-1/2".
They used a fixes fan and spacer..

Thanks guys.. Anyone with a picture(s) of the configuration? I'd like to see with my eyes. Would the previously mentioned configuration also apply to a 440+6 drivetrain?
Cheers,

I have a 1970 Challenger with a 440 4V engine with radiator 2998960 with a 216 fan and a 328 shroud with the factory clutch 070 and everything runs just fine. No clearance problems. Looking at your photos I wonder what shroud you are using and it appears the passengers side of the radiator has no shroud bracket. There should be fan shroud brackets on both sides of the 22 inch radiator. This makes me wonder if you are using the incorrect shroud. Just trying to help.
The fan's the problem... This is the fan that was on the car when my friend got it. Problem is the previous owner 26"'ed the car. Unfortunately, it is a cluster... So, I'm putting everything back to OEM. The 22" is just fine. My buddy just picked up a proper 2863224 7-blade 18" dia. fan & 2998328 shroud. The one in the picture is a 22" shroud with a 216 fan (not correct). Soooooooo, I only need to find a proper spacer now. That shouldn't be too hard...

Hey guy's, Don't mean to hi-jack, but I've got my original fan and spacer off my 70 Challenger RT that came with a 22" if you are interested. If I can help a fellow Mopar member, I'll give it to you. Send me a PM if I can help. Take care, Jeff

So, is there a factory style fan/clutch assembly that will work with the 22" radiator/shroud or do you HAVE to use the spacer and smaller fan? I have run into the same exact problem with the fan hitting the shroud but would like have a clutch assembly if possible.

Thanks for the advice. Searching the part number for my current fan blade, I see that it is 20", MP fan blade is 18 so that should do the trick. Thanks for the help. Joe.
