Any thoughts on how long slicks can sit around and still be usable? I have a set that are less than 1 year old but I plan on not using them any time soon. I would like to keep them but only if they would be usable in 5 years? 10 years? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sell them now and buy new ones unless you know that you will use them in less than five years. The compound in them starts driying up as soon as they come out of the molds. If you store them in a cool dry place out of the sunlight they can (some brands I've used have)last up to 5 years or so. I bought two new pairs of the old Firestone 9x30 bias ply stocker tires in 1988, I ran the first pair for the first half of the year and then put the other pair on, they had been mounted and balanced in the trailer out of the sun and they didn't work worth a hoot Luckily I was at a race where the west coast Firestone truck was there and they ended up replacing them for no charge I got really lucky I have bought and used a set of Used M/T ET 10.5x31x15W slicks that had three runs on them, I had to soap up the insides to use them tubeless three years ago, I'm still using them now, around twenty runs on them now

I know a guy that bought a set of M/T 14x32 in 1984 and they were still on the car in 2001 and still hookin good. No weather cracks and you could see the wear holes too. It was a 10.50 max wedge car that only seen daylight on race days. I really don't know why they lasted that long. My 9 inch goodyears lasted 2 years before the sidewalls got weather cracks.

Sell them, buy new one when your ready. You can always get used up ones cheap if you need them to build.

Was talking to a guy at the track last weekend and this subject came up. I have a older set of 29x10.0 hoosiers (guessing 5 yrs old) sit in my basement most of the time. I had them on the car last summer for a trip to the tack and don't seem to hook anymore. Still plenty of life according to wear holes. Well any way this guy said to spray wd40 on them brings them back to life. Just wondering if anyone has done this?

well ymmv but my personal experience was this. the tires on the sig car were at least 10 years old because the car mostly sat while i was racing bikes. so i figured they had to be replaced...put a new set on and the difference was nothing, zilch, zero.

When I was building my car I called M/T and asked how
long they would be good for.. they said if you keep
them out of the sun and dont break the the surface
(as in spinning them) they will last years... thats
why they say burn them in good the FIRST time to break
the surface seal

Thanks for all the input. These slicks came on one of the new super cobra jet mustangs and they have a special logo on them. Everybody says don't use them. Save them if I sell the car. I asked this question because I don't plan on selling any time soon but didn't want to not use them if they would be junk in 5 years anyway. I will probably save them for now.

Yes, WD-40 will make them sticky again, but it won't last. You'll burn through the "treated" rubber and then they'll spin again.
Roll a few coats of WD-40 on them w/ a paint roller, allowing it to dry 10-15 minutes b/t coats. You can wrap the tire up in plastic to seal it up and let it sit like that overnight...although I didn't see much difference doing it that way.
It is very effective, but like I said, not a permanent fix.

Nothing better than a brand new pair of tires.

I was told to saok some towels w/ vinegar lay them on the tires over night.....never tried it.
