I had a question about the early axles from Chrysler. I have one in my 62' and was wondering what my options may be to get away from the tapered axle... I have a few later 8.75's laying around that I may be able to use...

Should I bother trying to swap it out? What are some of the disadvantages to these type of axles besides having to have a special tool to remove the drums? Im trying to make the car is reliable as possible as it may see some long distance trips...any help is appreciated. Thanks

There is not an issue with thos axles on a driver . They only became an isue with slicks and high horsepower cars. Remember they where on max wedge cars and 64 hemi cars with no real issues. Jake

Ok, what about pullers for the drums? Are they available anywhere? Im worried about if I break down somewhere on the side of the road, not being able to have the thing serviced with a basic set of tools....

My 62' is a 383 car with a little bit of a cam and fresh heads...Id guess somewhere around 325 horse...so Im not worried about the horsepower factor...just being able to fix it if something should break...

I've heard that a complete E-body 8 3/4 bolts right in an early C-body.

Get the flanged axle replacement kit from DrDiff. Keep your housing.

I have had nothing but bad luck with my two-piece '64 setup, finally swapped for a later model one.

My kid first installed a 69 C body in his 62 300.Then he put in my 65 B body rear.It fits almost perfect. He ran the offset rear shackles and its like it was made for the car.The 69 had the wheels out a little too much. The pullers for the hubs are on Ebay at times.Just find a brand name like SnapOn or Mac etc.I got mine for like 40 bucks with shipping.Really noy a bad setup but you need the puller to get the drums off. That and the shoes are expensive especially if you have the 12 inch brakes.Rocky

The 65 to 67 is the narrow ones to give more tire clearance about 3/4 of an inch drum to drum.

Thanks. What would my 62' C body be considered having? It has a drop out center like an 8 3/4...but I dont think its the common 741, 742 or 489 style case...

I have a few later 8 3/4 axles laying around and if I knew the measurement of my 62's I could see if one may work...

I sell a new, 1 piece axle package for your car, so you can re-use your original housing.

E-mail me if you are interested.

Does that mean the overall width and spring perch spacing is the same between a 60's B body and a 62 Chrysler full size?

Yes they fit almost perfect. My kid use the MP offset shackels on the rear and I believe he moved the front about 1/2 inch.Thats how close they are.The 69* C body fit also but was wider and the perches had to have the springs pushed sideways a bit.He drove the car for 2 years with the C under it.Then he snagged my B one and its been there for at least 5 years of street and strip miles. He probally puts 5K a year on it.Rocky
