Guys,

I am disassembling my 440, which has overheated a couple of times, once pretty badly.

I measured my connecting rod side clearances prior to pulling the pistons, and was getting in the 0.026"-0.030" range, and the spec is 0.017" or less. Could this have been causing my excessive oil consumption after the bad overheating episode?

How do you fix this, buy wider connecting rods?

Thanks.

Greg

hi
that is one speck you do not have to worry about !

many here run much more side clearance with no problems .
i have .025 for the last 20 years on a motor an it runs perfect !

It's good to pay attention to specs, the rod side clearance spec however is one number that virtually never comes up in spec yet never causes any issues either.... Fact is guys putting Chevy rods on Chrysler cranks wind up with upwards of .060 clearance & I've never heard of a problem caused by it....

It's more like "minimum of .017".

More has not been a problem on anything I've done, and I've NEVER seen it below .017, except the one time I needed chamfered bearings for the small block with a forged eagle crank, and the bearings that were supplied we're standard bearings. Once the new bearings arrived, the side clearance was up around .025
