I was wondering if anybody changed their stock torsion bars to aftermarket and if it was worth it.The stock bars in my 70 Duster measure .840 thousandths and the ones from PST {Performance Suspension Technologies} measure 1.03 inches.I was wondering if it was worth the expense at all in improving the handling of the car.I plan on putting a 318 in it,340 someday if I can find one.Mostly for street cruising,an "Occasional" stoplight shootout.I could budget the money for other things the car needs if that is the case.I will have to replace the torsion bar rubber seal boots if I elect to stay stock. The new bars don,t include new seals,an added expense.

Short answer is yes. But the preferred vendor is Firm Feel, due to better quality. Subject has been discussed ad nauseum in this and the "Corners Are Best" forum.

Bigger torsion bars WITH good shocks (not KYBs) will make a huge difference in ride/handling.

But a stock rebuild of 15+ year-old front end parts will help a lot, too, and should probably come first.

Just looked at the PST site at the bars and seals. Those stock type seals are a very good price at 7.50 each. The other kind, "prothane slip ons" are not. You can get those at Summit for 5.25 a set.
Also, looking at the notes on those 1.03" bars, they say the hex is reindexed for lowered cars and that stock ride height might now be achievable.. Just a note I saw. I might be in the market for a set of 1.03" bars. The price seems pretty good.

Yep....I am installing PST,s Polygraphite suspension rebuild kit in the front end right now.I am wondering if .160 thousandths thickness in the bars is worth the $200.00 plus cost of the bars if it will make the car handle better. Will the front end height be improved also??????

That will help in removing some of the slop in component movement.

Spring rate is not a linear relationship to T-bar diameter. Upping your bars from the .840" diameter (along with appropriate shocks to control them, as a previous poster said) will make a big difference in handling, response, and possibly even braking, to a small degree.

You'll still have the adjusters in the control arms, so you should still be able to set ride height (in the front anyways) where you want.

1" plus on an A body is getting pretty stiff. If you want a good street handler something in between what you have and 1" would be better. Adding a sway bar or a bigger one than OE may be the best first step anyhow.
